교차 문화 자각력 신장을 위한 문화 교육에서의 영화 이용법 고찰 (The use of movies in cultural education for enhancing cross-cultural awareness)

초록

This study aims to research and validate a method of cultural education to enhance Korean English learners' cross-cultural awareness. Helping students strengthen their cross-cultural awareness rather than just introducing to them simple cultural facts has to be the foremost purpose of cultural teaching. Movies can help us achieve this goal in the ELT classroom by introducing our students to a wide array of cultural learning opportunities. Movies can be regarded as one set of authentic material because they contain scenes in which the people of the target culture settle their problems and lead their lives within the setting of their own culture. As for the question of what movies to choose, Kluckhohn's model gives us an insight into searching for a solution. Ortuño (1991), in her article, modified Kluckhohn's model and then used it to analyze another culture's value system. Her modification works as a framework to make cross-cultural comparison possible between a student's own cultural values and those of the target culture. By showing students segments of movies that they cannot easily accept culturally, teachers can draw the students' attention and explain the difference in value orientations between the students' own culture and the target culture exhibited in the movie. At the two exams and students' evaluations, this method was proven to be very efficient.
