영재학생의 영어 독해력 관련 변인 구조모형 분석 (The Structural Model Analysis of Related Variables on English Reading Comprehension Ability of Gifted Students)

초록

본 연구는 영재학생의 영어 독해력과 관련 있는 변인들 간의 인과관계를 경험적으로 검증하고, 이를 근거로 영재학생들에게 어떤 차별화된 영어 독해력 교육이 필요한지에 대한 이론적 근거를 제시하는데 목적이 있다.
본 연구는 영어독해력과 관련된 선행연구들을 토대로 연구모형을 설정하였고, 설정된 연구모형의 구조적 관계를 분석하고자 교육청 지정 영재교육원에 재학 중인 영재 초등학생 5, 6, 중1, 2학년 240명을 대상으로 자료를 수집하였다. 수집된 자료는 SPSS 16.0과 AMOS 16.0 프로그램을 이용하여 변인 간 경로의 유의성과 인과관계를 확인하였다.
연구결과로는 첫째, 일반학생을 대상으로 한 선행연구를 기초로 연구모형을 구축하고 이것에 영재학생들로부터 얻은 데이터를 적용하였을 때 연구모형의 적합도는 수용할만한 수준은 되었으나 높은 수준은 아니었다. 둘째, 연구모형의 관련변인들 간 경로계수의 방향성과 그 유의성을 살펴본 결과, 부모의 교육적 지원 변인과 영어 어휘-문법 지식, 국어 독해력, 영어 독해력 변인 사이의 경로가 유의하지 않은 것으로 나타났고 나머지 변인들의 경로는 정적으로 유의한 영향을 미치고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 셋째, 연구모형의 관련변인들 간 인과관계를 살펴본 결과, 전체적으로 영어 어휘-문법 지식과 영어 독해력 변인의 관계를 제외한 모든 경로에서 정적으로 유의하게 나타났다.
이러한 경험적 연구결과에 기초하여 볼 때, 일반학생들을 대상으로 한 선행연구에 기초한 연구모형의 변인들 간 인과관계 구조에는 수용할 수준은 되었으나 영재학생들의 영어 독해력에 영향을 미치는 변인들을 보다 적합하게 설명해줄 수 있는 구조모형에 대한 후속 연구가 필요하다고 생각된다.

The purpose of this study was to reveal the path structure of related variables of Korean gifted students' English reading comprehension ability, English vocabulary & grammar knowledge, Korean reading comprehension ability, metacognitive awareness of reading strategies, and parents' educational support.
The subjects of this study were 110 gifted elementary school students in the fifth and sixth grades, 130 gifted middle school students in the first and second grades, and their parents, who were all from the 3 different gifted education centers. The collected data was analyzed with SPSS 16.0 and AMOS 16.0 for conducting path analysis.
The path model carried out a path analysis in AMOS 16.0, then tested the statistical significance of each regression weight for finding fit between real material and the path model in significant level .05. After verification of model fit, direct and indirect effects of all variables on English reading ability of Korean gifted students were investigated and analyzed.
The results of this research are summarized as follows:First, the results of analyzing the goodness of fit of research model showed an acceptable fit to the present data, however the results were not as satisfactory as expected. Second, the results of examining the direction and significance of path coefficients among related variables of the research model showed that some variables exerted significant effects in positive(+) directions. Third, the results of examining causal relationships among related variables of the research model showed that there were some significant positive(+) effects among all variables in direct, indirect, and total effects.
The conclusions of this research are summarized as follows:First, the research model was based on review of previous studies for regular students so this model did not show a satisfactory fit for gifted students. Therefore, related variables on English reading comprehension ability of gifted students affect differently when we compare with regular students. Second, metacognitive awareness, which can not be developed by either rote learning or prerequisite learning, takes a major role in gifted students' English reading comprehension. Also parents' educational support helps in maximizing giftedness of their gifted children. Third, the results showed that Korean reading comprehension variable had the most important role for English reading comprehension of gifted students. It shows that the key factor to improve English reading comprehension of gifted students is reading various Korean literature which will lead gifted student to better understand great English literature.
