Improvements in overseas competitiveness of a firm can lead to nation’s value-added creation enhancement from the global value chain. In this case study, market entry into China by Hyundai Glovis is presented to illustrate the nature of global value chain and to propose means to further strengthen corporate competitiveness. In order to improve distribution and logistics competitiveness of Hyundai Glovis from corporate micro-perspective in global value added creation process, measures to increase competitiveness within global value added chain that will benefit Hyundai Glovis are identified.
In this study, we seek to find factors that can increase value added by expanding merits and strengths of Hyundai Glovis in China. Conceptual factors that can raise value in global value chain are incorporated in survey on strengthening business competitiveness of Hyundai Glovis. In particular, exploratory study with emphasis on governance and upgrading strategy in global value chain on direction and role Hyundai Glovis should take as a certified integrated logistics company is conducted. The purpose of this case study is to propose measures to increase overall global value added through strengthening competitiveness of Hyundai Glovis. To this end, new form of cooperative governance strategy that will further reap the benefits of partnership and upgrading strategy in areas of service and R&D, design & marketing, procurement & distribution and production that will develop even closer ties with affiliate firms are presented. Implementation of such strategies will enable Hyundai Glovis to expand its business boundaries as a certified integrated logistics company and to solidify its position in China. Although this case study is based on Hyundai Glovis, this study will provide valuable insights to aspiring logistics companies that seek to enter the Chinese market.
