초록

이 논문에서는 량스추(梁實秋)가 어떠한 번역 가치관으로 건강한 인성의 가치를 실천했고, 또 어떠한 번역 방법론으로 자국 문학의 발전을 기획했는지에 주된 관심을 갖고 논의를 전개한다. 이 연구를 통해 그가 번역으로부터 인성 문학의 역량을 찾았고, 번역 방법에 있어 많은 계발 작용을 했으며, 중국 희극 발전의 기반을 다졌음을 확인할 수 있다.
먼저, 량스추는 문학의 가치는 영구불변의 인성을 표현하는 데 있으며, 건강한 인성의 문학을 창작하기 위해 이성으로써 감정과 상상을 절제해야 한다고 강조했다. 하지만 주류 담론으로부터 소외되고 비판받던 그에게 번역은 인성의 가치를 전달하고 자신의 문학적 이상을 대변할 수 있는 방편이었다. 그는 서양 고전의 번역을 통해 인성의 여러 면모들과 정감 등을 옮겼고, 역자 서문이나 작품 해설을 통해 인성에 대한 깊이 있는 탐구로 나아갔다. 그중에서도 셰익스피어 문학은 그의 문학적 이상을 대변하기에 가장 좋은 모델로서 그로부터 인성 문학의 역량과 사상의 공명(共鳴)을 찾았고, 셰익스피어 문학에 고전의 가치를 부여하여 번역에 가장 큰 공력을 쏟았다.
다음으로, 량스추는 번역을 그 자체로서의 ‘옮김’ 기능에 입각할 것을 강조했고, 독자의 이해를 돕는 ‘봉사’로 봤다. 그는 원문의 구절을 단위로 충분히 소화한 다음 직역의 충실함과 의역의 매끄러움을 살려 번역의 신뢰성과 가독성을 높이고자 했다. 그와 함께 그는 원작에 대한 엄격한 분석과 원작의 구조를 보존하는 번역 원칙으로 작품에 담긴 사상성과 예술성을 온전히 전달하고자 했다. 그는 번역을 진행하면서 주석을 통해 독자들이 원문을 이해하고 예술 체험의 효과를 거둘 수 있도록 했다. 그리고 작품마다 서문 집필을 통해 번역의 신뢰성과 학술성을 높였다. 또한 그는 원작의 구조를 최대한 보존하려 했고, 원문의 내용을 고치거나 생략하지 않았다. 그가 원작의 구조와 형식을 지키려 했던 이유는 서양의 희극 방식을 들여와서 중국 희극 발전의 기반으로 삼기 위해서였다. 그러한 점에서 그가 필생에 걸쳐 완역한 《셰익스피어 전집》은 서양의 희극 방식을 체득하는 기반 사업이자 중국 희극 발전을 위한 봉사로서도 의미를 지닌다고 할 것이다.

영어초록

In this paper, I will discuss on what translation values Liangshiqiu practiced and what translation methodology planned the development of his country's literature. This study confirms that he has found the capacity of personality literature from translation, has developed many things in translation methods, and laid the foundation for the development of Chinese theaters.
First, Liangshiqiu emphasized that the value of literature lies in expressing an immutable personality and that emotions and imagination should be restrained by reason in order to create a healthy personality literature. However, when he was alienated and criticized by mainstream discourse, translation was a way to convey the value of personality and to represent his literary ideals. He translated various aspects of personality and emotions through translations of Western classics, and went on to explore personality in depth through translator preface and work commentary. Shakespeare's literature, among other things, was the best model to represent his literary ideals, and thus sought the resonance of character literature and ideas, giving Shakespeare's literature the value of classics and thus the greatest contribution to translation.
Next, Liangshiqiu emphasized that translation should be based on the "transfer" function itself and viewed it as "service" to help readers understand. He tried to improve the reliability and readability of the translation by fully digesting the phrases in the original text and then utilizing the faithfulness of the direct translation and smoothness of the translation. At the same time, he tried to convey the thoughtfulness and artistry contained in the work with strict analysis of the original work and translation principles that preserve the structure of the original work. As he proceeded with the translation, he allowed readers to understand the original text and achieve the effects of art experience through explanatory notes. And each work has increased the credibility and academicity of translation through preface writing. He also tried to preserve the original structure as much as possible, and did not correct or omit the original text. The reason he tried to protect the structure and format of the original work was to bring in Western theaters methods and make them the basis for the development of Chinese theaters. In this regard, his lifelong work, "Shakespeare's Complete Collection" will be said to be meaningful as a foundation project for mastering Western theaters and as a service to the development of Chinese theaters.
