『경향신문』에 연재된 『동패락송』 이야기의 선정 경향과 번역 의도 (The Story Selection Trend and Translation Intention of Dongpaeraksong Serialized in the KyunghyangShinmun)

초록

본고는 18세기에 저술된 『동패락송』이 20세기 초 『경향신문』에 연재된 의도를 그 선정된 이야기의 번역 경향을 통해 살폈다. 『경향신문』 발간호에는 해당 신문의 발행 목적 네 가지가 적혀 있다. 이 중 세 번째 목적은 ‘요긴한 지식’을 나타내기 위함이다. ‘요긴한 지식’을 알기 위한 방법으로 다시 세 가지 항목을 두었는데, 바로 ‘론셜’, ‘국법’, ‘리약이’이다. 논설은 사람들에게 쓸모 있는 지식을 알려주기 위해 마련한 란이고, 국법은 악한 자에게 피해를 입지 않기 위해 법지식을 알려주는 란이며, 이야기는 전통시대 사적 중 유명한 이야기를 실어 재미와 유익함을 얻기 위해 마련한 란이다. 이들은 사건을 서사로 말하라는 시대의 요청을 대중의 요구로 받아들였고, 신문을 통해 사실 정보와 사건을 이야기로 읽을 수 있게 소설란을 새롭게 만들었다. ‘유명한 이야기를 가려 기재하고, 이전의 갸륵한 행실을 알아 재미를 느껴 사람들에게 유익함을 주겠다’고 밝힌 것처럼, 이들은 『동패락송』을 유명한 이야기로 선택하였다. 당시는 현실의 문제를 개인의 힘과 능력으로 해결할 수 있는 이야기가 필요했다. 남다른 마음과 힘을 가진 실존 인물이 시대적 혼란을 해결하는 이야기. 이런 이야기를 통해 유대감을 갖고 안정을 찾길 바랐던 것이다. 때문에 『동패락송』의 현실적 이야기들이 다시 소환될 수밖에 없었다. 시대를 초월해 서사 속 선․용력․자비심 등은 이미 대중성이 확보된 제재였다. 『경향신문』은 『동패락송』에서 이와 같은 주제를 담은 이야기를 선별하여 번역했고, 번역 방식 또한 『경향신문』의 발간 취지와 같은 방향이었다. 선하고 갸륵한 행실을 한 인물을 선정하였고, 이 이야기의 해당 주제를 더 강조하고 의미화하는 방향으로 번역했기 때문이다. 이처럼 『경향신문』에서 선정된 『동패락송』의 번역은 번역자의 분명한 의도가 반영될 수밖에 없었고, 실제 번역도 일관된 방식으로 이루어졌다. 선함을 강조하고, 악을 징치하려는 의식, 궁극적으로는 힘을 가진 자가 불선하거나 악한 행위를 한 자를 징계한다는 주제를 통해 도덕과 윤리의 문제를 독자가 판단하게 하였다. 번역자는 이야기의 주제가 독자 개인에게 행위의 규범이 되길 바라는 의도를 내포하고 있었던 것이다.

영어초록

This paper examines the intention of Dongpaeraksong written in the 18th century to be serialized in KyunghyangShinmun in the early 20th century through selected stories and translation trends. In the issue of KyunghyangShinmun, the purpose of publication was divided into four items. The third of these is to represent essential knowledge. In addition, there are three ways to express essential knowledge: ‘editorial’, ‘national law’, and ‘story’. The editorial is a column prepared to inform people of useful knowledge, the national law is a column to inform legal knowledge to avoid being harmed by the evil one, and the story is a column to get fun and benefit by loading famous stories among historical sites in the traditional era. They accepted the request of the times to tell events as narratives as a demand of the public, and created a novel section so that factual information and events can be read as stories through newspapers. Just like the purpose of publication, ‘I will cover and write famous stories from scams, find out about previous ‘glorious’ behaviors, and give benefit to people by having fun’, they chose Dongpaeraksong as a famous story. At that time, a story that could solve real problems with individual strength and ability was needed. I hoped that a real person would find stability through a story of resolving the confusion and problems of the times with extraordinary mind and strength. Because of this, the realistic stories of Dongpaeraksong had no choice but to be summoned again. Beyond the times, goodness, manly strength and benevolence were the subjects of narratives that had already secured popularity. The translation of selected stories in Dongpaeraksong also coincided with the purpose of publication of KyunghyangShinmun. A person who performed a good and honorable act was selected, and the theme of the story was translated in a way that emphasizes and makes sense. As such, the story and translation of Dongpaeraksong selected by KyunghyangShinmun couldn't help but reflect the clear intention of the translator, and the actual translation was also carried out in a consistent way. Through the theme of emphasizing goodness, punishing evil, and ultimately punishing those who have done bad or bad deeds by those who have power, it implies the intention that readers judge moral and ethical issues and hope that this will become the norm for behavior.
