In this paper the texts that contain YHWH's warnings of Israel's annihilation before entering the promised land and their realization have been analyzed. It is to identify the concept of the land in those texts. In order to achieve this goal, the concept of the land itself needs to be clarified by studying the texts in Exodus(29:45-46) and Leviticus(25:38) where the concept is described with much clarity. In this study I use the term 'conceptuality' which denotes the main aspect to which various concepts of the land commonly point. YHWH wants to be the God of Israel. And it is the core of the covenant between YHWH and Israel and it is related to the promise of Israel's inheritance of the land. Therefore, YHWH led Israel into the land and would dwell among the people in the land.
In this study the question why YHWH did not allow Israel to enter the land and destroyed them in the wilderness is asked and the corresponding reasons are sought. This study shows that Israel misunderstood their God who wanted them to live and settle in the land. They thought that YHWH tried to annihilate them in the wilderness. The God of life is YHWH but Israel regarded Him as the God of death because they suffered from hunger, thirst, and fear of death by Egyptians. Eventually, YHWH killed all the Israelites who experienced the exodus event and led those who did not have that experience into the land.
The covenant relationship between YHWH and Israel is only valid through the medium of the promised land. The concept of the land is the basis for this covenant relationship. The land means more than just simple geographical space. This study clearly suggests that conceptuality to which every concepts in the land point is this covenant relationship between YHWH and Israel.
