초록

이 논문은 『위숫디막가(Visuddhimagga)』 제17장의 ‘상카라를 조건으로 의식이 있음에 관한 논의(Saṅkhārapaccayāviññāṇakathā)’를 중심으로 재생연결의 마음과 그 대상, 죽음에서 재생연결로 이어지는 과정, 그 과정에서의 마음의 흐름[心相續]에 대하여 고찰한 것이다.
아비담마에 따르면, 한 생이 재생연결의 마음에서 시작되어 죽음으로 끝나면 마음은 곧바로 다음 생의 재생연결로 이어진다. 재생연결의 마음에는 19가지가 있고, 그 종류에 따라 그 생에 태어날 장소와 모습 등이 결정된다. 이 마음의 대상은 과거나 현재, 또는 과거와 현재라고 말할 수 없는 개념적인 것으로, 업과 그 업의 상징, 다음에 태어날 곳의 모습으로 구체화되어 나타난다. 재생연결의 마음은 이 가운데 하나를 대상으로 가지기 때문에, 그 생은 자신이 지은 업의 결과로서 나타난다.
재생연결의 마음은 이전 생의 죽음의 마음에서 이어지지만, 죽음의 마음이 그대로 다음 생으로 옮겨가는 것은 아니다. 재생연결의 마음이 가지는 대상은 이전 생의 죽음 직전에 일어난 인식과정에서 나타난 대상이고, 이전 생의 죽음의 마음은 그 생의 재생연결의 마음이 가지는 대상을 대상으로 하기 때문이다. 그러므로 이 둘은 서로 다른 대상을 가진 다른 마음이다. 그렇기에 윤회의 과정에서 다른 세계에 다른 모습으로 태어날 수 있다. 그러나 재생연결의 마음은 이전 생의 업 등을 원인으로 하여 일어난 것이기 때문에, 이전 생과 무관한 완전히 다른 마음으로 일어나는 것도 아니다. 그렇기에 자신이 지은 업의 과보를 받을 수 있다. 한 생과 그 다음 생의 연속성은 바로 여기에 있다.

영어초록

In this paper, I scrutinized the consciousness of rebirth(paṭisandhicitta) and its object, the process leading from death to rebirth and the continuity of consciousness(cittasantati) in that process, focusing on Saṅkhārapaccayāviññāṇakathā in the chapter 17 of Visuddhimmagga.
According to Abhidhamma, one life begins with the consciousness of rebirth and ends in the death. And then the consciousness(citta) continues to rebirth in the next life immediately. There are 19 types of the consciousness of rebirth, and depending on the type, what kind of world you will be born in and what kind of form you will have in the next life is determined. The objects of this consciousness are past, present and conceptual thing(paññatti) that cannot be said past or present. These are embodied as kamma, as the symbol of that kamma or as images of the next place of birth, and appear through the sense organs. The consciousness of rebirth has as its object one of these objects, and in this way, the next life is determined by the kamma one has created.
The consciousness of rebirth continues from the consciousness of death(cuticitta) of the previous life, If the same consciousness were to continue, it would go against the Buddhist theory of no-self(anattan), which does not recognize the subject of ‘round of rebirth(saṃsāra), and if a different consciousness occurred, it could not be said to be a continuation from the previous life. In conclusion, neither completely the same consciousness is transferred nor completely different consciousness arises.
We can say the consciousness of death does not transfer to the next life as it is. Because the object possessed by the consciousness of rebirth is the object appeared in the last cognitive process that occurred just before death in the previous life, and the consciousness of death of the previous life has the object possessed by the consciousness of rebirth in that life. Therefore, these two are different minds with different objects. However, since the consciousness of rebirth arises due to the kamma of a previous life, it does not arise as a completely different consciousness unrelated to the previous life. Therefore, you can receive the fruits of your kamma. This is the continuity between the one life and the next life of that.
