초록

이 논문은 수나라 보귀(寶貴) 등이 이역합본한 『합부금광명경』 권3 「다라니최정지품」 제6과 원효의 『금광명경소』 「다라니최정지품」(집일본)과 관련하여 호법성과 호국성의 관계를 살펴본 글이다. 불교의 4부 『아함경』과 수많은 대승경전에는 다양한 형태의 호법성과 호국성이 투영되어 있다. 붓다의 정법을 보호하는 ‘호법’과 어떠한 국가를 보호하는 ‘호국’은 상즉(相卽)하는 개념이다. 상호투영의 속성을 지닌 상입(相入)과 달리 상즉은 상호동일의 속성을 지니며 서로에게 나아가는 성격을 보여준다. 이 때문에 정법 보호의 ‘호법’과 국가 보호의 ‘호국’ 개념은 상호동일성을 지향한다고 할 수 있다.
수나라 보귀 등이 합역한 『합부금광명경』에는 호법과 호국의 특성을 보여주는 품들이 다수 존재한다. 특히 「사천왕품」과 「다라니최정지품」은 이 경전의 호법성과 호국성을 잘 보여주고 있다. 청주 흥덕사지 고인쇄박물관 소장 『합부금광명경』 권3에 해당하는 「다라니최정지품」과 원효 『금광명경소』의 「사천왕품」(집일본)과 「다라니최정지품」(집일본)에는 이 경전의 호법성과 호국성을 알 수 있는 부분이 남아있다. 그 외의 「삼신분별품」과 「제병품」 및 「은주다라니품」과 「부촉품」 등까지도 호법성과 호국성의 측면에서 접근해 볼 수 있다. 무엇보다도 이 경전이 대중들 속에서 널리 읽힐 수 있었던 것은 원효의 『금광명경소』가 일정한 영향을 미친 것으로 추정된다. 특히 원효 주석서의 「다라니최정지품」은 청주 흥덕사지 소재 『합부금광명경』 권3 「다라니최정지품」 제6과 관련하여 다라니의 호법성과 다라니를 통한 호국성의 접점과 통로를 잘 보여주고 있다.
진제 번역본 제3권에 실린 「다라니최정지품」 제6은 본문의 여백에 한자의 자형을 단순화한 구결자로 토를 단 ‘자토(字吐) 석독구결’과 점이나 선 모양의 구결자로 토를 단 ‘점토(点吐) 석독구결’, 먹물을 무친 묵서로 적은 ‘묵서(墨書)구결’과 먹물을 무치지 않은 각필로 적은 ‘각필(角筆)구결’이 동시에 적힌 유일한 판본이라는 점에서 서지학적으로 높은 평가를 받고 있다. 이 경전에서 붓다는 “이 모든 사람의 왕이 만일 지극한 마음으로 이 경을 듣고 공양하고 공경하며 존중하고 찬탄하면, 너희들 사천왕은 바로 옹호하여 그들의 쇠잔함의 근심을 없애고 안락하게 해 주어야 한다”고 설한다. 또 “만일 어떤 사람이 이와 같은 미묘한 경전을 널리 베풀어 유포하여 사람과 하늘 가운데 크게 불사(佛事)를 지어 한량없는 중생을 크게 이롭게 할 수 있다면, 이와 같은 사람은 너희들 사천왕이 반드시 옹호하여 다른 인연으로 혼란해지는 일이 없게 하고 마음을 고요하게 하여 즐거움을 누릴 수 있게 하며, 계속해서 이 경을 널리 베풀 수 있게 해야 한다”고 설한다. 이것은 모든 사람의 왕이 지극한 마음으로 이 경을 듣고 공양 공경 존중 찬탄하면, 사천왕이 바로 옹호하여 그들의 쇠잔함의 근심을 없애고 안락하게 해 주어야 한다는 불설을 통해 호국이 호법으로 이어질 수 있는 근거가 확보된다.
나아가 “이 다라니주를 외우고 지니면 모든 두려움의 대상인 것, 곧 ①일체의 악한 짐승인 호랑이·이리·사자와 ②일체의 악한 귀신과 ③사람과 사람이 아닌 것 등으로서 원수인 도적과 ④재난·횡액과 ⑤모든 번뇌에서 벗어나고 다섯 가지 장애에서 벗어나며 초지에서 제10지까지를 생각하여 잊지 않는다”는 「다라니최정지품」의 메시지는 불법 수호라는 면에서 마땅히 해야 할 수행 과제와 수행 결과를 보여주고 있다. 이처럼 다라니를 외우고 지니는 호법성에 기초해 다섯 가지 장애에서 벗어나며 초지에서 제10지까지 생각하여 잊지 않는다는 호국성이 정당화될 수 있는 근거가 확보된다. 『합부금광명경』의 「다라니최정지품」은 경전 속의 한 품에 지나지 않지만 근본의 ‘주(呪)다라니’와 지말의 ‘행(行)다라니’의 구분을 통해 호법성의 중층적 구조를 보여주고 있다. 다라니의 중층성은 근본과 지말의 유기성을 통해 이어지며 근본의 호법성은 실천을 통해 지말의 호국성을 담지해 내고 있다. 바로 이러한 점에서 호법성과 호국성의 상즉성을 논증할 수 있게 된다. 호법성과 호국성은 ‘상입’의 측면보다는 ‘상즉’의 측면에서 접근할 때 좀 더 유기적으로 이해할 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

This study examines both the chapter on the purest state Dhāraṇī (陀羅尼最浄地品) in Bound volumes of Golden Light Sutra Vol. 3 — that Baogui (寶貴) of the Sui dynasty regathered — and the same chapter in Wonhyo's Regathered Commentaries on Golden Light Sutra, with respect to the relationship between the characteristics of defending the country and defending Buddha-dharma.
Various forms of the characteristic of defending the country (護國性) and the characteristic of defending Buddha-dharma (護法性) appear in the four Agama Sutras and numerous Mahayana Buddhist scriptures. However, ‘Defending Buddha-dharma’ and ‘defending the country’ are correlated concepts: the two concepts have the same properties and show the characteristic that lends itself to one another. For this reason, it can be said that the concept of ‘defending Buddha-dharma’ and ‘defending the country’ seems to be moving in the same direction.
In the Golden Light Sutra — which was jointly translated by Baogui of the Sui Dynasty (along with others) — there are many chapters showing the characteristics of both protecting the country and protecting the Buddha-dharma. In particular, the “four guardian gods chapter” and the “chapter on the purest state Dhāraṇī” show the characteristics of both defending the country and defending Buddha-dharma.
In particular, the “chapter on the purest state Dhāraṇī” in Bound Volumes of Golden Light Sutra, Vol. 3 — as housed by Cheongju Early Printing Museum located at the old Hungduk temple site in Cheongju — and the “chapter on four guardian gods” and the “chapter on the purest state Dhāraṇī” in Wonhyo's Commentaries on Regathered Golden Light Sutra, demonstrate characteristics of both defending the country and defending Buddha-dharma.
In addition, in the “chapter on analysis of three bodies” (三身分別品), “chapter on healing” (除病品), “chapter on silver master Dharani” (銀主陀羅尼品), and “chapter on entrusting” (咐囑品), the characteristics of both defending the country and defending Buddha-dharma can be observed.
Above all, it is presumed that Wonhyo's Commentaries on Golden Light Sutra exerted a certain influence on why this sutra could be widely read among the public. In particular, the “chapter on the purest state Dhāraṇī” in Wonhyo's commentaries shows the connection between Dharani's characteristics of defending Buddha-dharma and defending the country in relation to section 6 of the “chapter on the purest state Dhāraṇī” in Bound Volume Golden Light Sutra, Vol.3, housed by the old print museum located in the old Hungduk temple site.
Section 6 of the “chapter on the purest state Dhāraṇī” in the third volume of the Paramârtha translation is held in high esteem bibliographically in that it is the only edition that has four different ways of showing the readings of Chinese characters in the margin of the text. The four ways of writing to show the reading of a Chinese character are as follows: Chinese characters in simplified symbols; punctuation marks in the form of points, or lines; monochromatic ink writing; and inscribing letters with a sharp wooden pen without using ink.
In this sutra, the Buddha states, "If the king of all these people listens to this sutra with all his heart, makes offerings, respects and admires it, then you four guardian gods should defend them, remove their anxiety and give them comfort." The Buddha also states that “If there is a person who spreads and circulates this subtle sutra widely, and can greatly benefit humans and immeasurable sentient beings in the heavens, such a person must be defended by you, the four guardian gods. They should be able to keep their minds quiet, enjoy happiness without being confused by other karma, so that they can continue to spread this sutra widely.” This means that, if the king of all people listens to this sutra with all his heart and gives thanks, honors, respects, and praises it, the four guardian gods will immediately protect them. This is the basis for gaining the Buddha-dharma's protection as a result of the protection of the country due to the workings of four guardian gods.
Furthermore, the “chapter on the purest state Dhāraṇī” says, “If you memorize and uphold this Dharani, you will be freed from the following five fears, that are 1) All bad beasts such as tigers, wolves, and lions 2) All evil spirits 3) Humans and non-humans, enemies such as thieves 4) Disasters and misfortunes and 5) all afflictions. On top of this, you will also be freed from the five hindrances, and you will not forget the first through tenth stages of the ten Bodhisattva stages.” This message in the “chapter on the purest state Dhāraṇī” shows what needs to be done to protect Buddha-dharma and what happens as the results.
In this manner, the characteristic of defending Buddha-dharma — which is given as a result of the practice of reciting and upholding the Dharani — secures the basis to justify the characteristic of defending the country.
Therefore, the characteristic of defending Buddha-dharma and the characteristic of defending a country can be understood more naturally when approached from the aspect of 'mutual containment' (相卽) rather than the aspect of 'mutual entry' (相入).
