임진왜란 관련 조선 기록 속 왜장(倭將)의 형상과 그 의미: 고니시 유키나가(小西行長)와 가토 기요마사(加藤淸正)의 경우 (The Figures and Meaning of the Japanese Generals in the Joseon Records Related to the Imjin War: the Case of Konishi Yukinaga and Katō Kiyomasa)

초록

이 글은 조선시대 임진왜란 관련 기록에 나타나는 ‘왜장(倭將)’ 고니시 유키나가(小西行長, ?~1600)와 가토 기요마사(加藤清正, 1562~1611)의 형상에 주목하여, 두 인물이 구현되는 양상과 그 의미를 탐색한 것이다. 유키나가와 기요마사는 임진왜란을 일으킨 주체의 대표자이며 조선에 집단 트라우마를 심어준 당사자이다. 그런데 조선 기록 속 두 왜장의 형상은 부정 일변도(否定一邊倒)로 재현되지 않으며, 나아가 두 왜장에 대한 객관적․긍정적 기록이 존재한다는 점을 확인할 수 있었다. 이러한 양상의 배경을 파악하고 의미를 규명하기 위해, 왜장이 언급된 임진왜란 관련 조선 기록을 사건과 기록의 성립 순서를 고려하여 검토해보았다. 왜장 형상과 그 특징을 살펴본바 유키나가의 경우, 전쟁 중반부까지는 명나라 유격장군 심유경(沈惟敬)의 영향하에 ‘주화파 외교관’의 형상을 유지했는데, 정유재란 직전의 반간계 사건을 계기로 이후 여러 기록에서 부정적인 ‘모사’의 형상으로 재현되었다. 기요마사의 경우, 전쟁 중 유키나가와 대비되는 행보 때문에 ‘호전적 무장’으로 형상화되는데, 전후의 일부 기록에서는 긍정적인 ‘덕장’으로 이야기된다. 이는 순왜(順倭) 국경인(鞠景仁)과의 대비 차원에서 형성된 부분도 있겠으나, 김귀영(金貴榮)․황정욱(黃廷彧) 등 왕자를 호종하던 이들의 신원(伸冤)과 연관되어 형상화되었을 가능성이 있다. 한편 18세기 후반 정사박해(丁巳迫害)와 관련하여, 박지원의 글에서 두 왜장이 전쟁의 가해자나 원수보다는 천주교도로서 호명된 사례가 있어 주목을 요한다. 조선 기록 속 왜장 형상은 전쟁 중 혹은 전쟁 후 조선인이 당면한 현실에 대응하기 위해, 필요와 목적에 따라 변화하였음을 알 수 있다.

영어초록

This article focuses on the figures and meaning of the “Japanese General” Konishi Yukinaga and Katō Kiyomasa in Joseon's records of the Imjin War, and explores the pattern and meaning of the two figures. The two Japanese are the representatives of the country that started the war and the parties who instilled collective trauma in Joseon. However it was confirmed that the figures of the two Japanese generals reproduced in the Joseon record were not reproduced in a negative way, and that there were records of objective and positive description of the two Japanese generals. To understand the background of these cases and to understand its meaning, this article reviewed the Joseon records related to the Imjin War where the the two generals are mentioned in consideration of the order in which events and records are established. As a result of examining the figures and characteristics of the Japanese general, in the case of Yukinaga, until the middle of the war, his character maintains the figure of a ‘pacifism diplomat’ under the influence of Ming's diplomat. On the verge of Jeong-yu War, due to the deceptional event occured, it changes into a negative ‘schemer’ figure. In the case of Kiyomasa, because of his contrasting moves against Yukinaga during the war, he is described as a figure of ‘warlike warrior’, but described as a ‘generous general’ in some postwar records. This may have been formed in contrast to Guk Gyeong-in, the traitor of Joseon, however, it is possible that it was embodied in connection with the elimination of the sins of Kim Gwi-young and Hwang Jung-wook, who served the prince during the war. On the other hand, in relation to the persecution of Catholics in the late 18th century, it is noticeable that there was a case in which these Japanese generals were depicted as Catholics instead of war enemies in Park Ji-won's writing. The figures of Japanese generals in the record had to be changed in necessity to respond to the reality that the People of Chosun Dynasty were faced during or after the war.
