초록

玉冊 內函은 옥책을 담았던 목조함이다. ‘내함’이라는 것은 옥책을 二重의 함에 담았기 때문에 1차적인 것을 내함, 그 내함을 담았던 것을 外函이라 구분한 것으로 의궤 기록을 따라 명명한 것이다. 내함은 외함과 다르게 주칠에 화려한 泥金 장식을 한 것이 특징이다.
조선 왕실은 왕비 책봉과 왕과 왕비의 상존호 의례를 위해 옥책과 함을 동시에 제작하였다. 국왕이 승하하면 祔廟儀에서, 생전에 받은 옥책이 담긴 함들 모두를 각각의 彩輿에 실어 종묘 神室에 봉안하였다. 이는 왕실을 찬미하는 내용의 頌德文을 담고 있는 옥책은 결국 왕실의 권위와 위치를 공고히 하고자 하는 표징으로서의 의미를 가지고 있었기 때문이다. 그래서 옥책을 담았던 내함 역시 중시 되었으며,『儀軌』를 비롯한『宗廟謄錄』등에 내함의 형태와 제작을 위한 물자· 참여 인원 등에 관한 자세한 기록을 남기고 있다.
현재 국립 고궁박물관에는 250 여점의 옥책과 내함이 함께 소장되어 있다. 옥책에는 제작 연도가 명기되어 있는데 그 시기는 1545년부터 1900년대 전반에 해당하며, 옥책을 통해 그것을 담았던 각 내함의 제작 연도도 명확하게 알 수 있다. 그런데 긴 세월동안 전해 오면서 옥책과 내함이 대체 혹은 교체된 경우가 생기면서 내함의 제작 연도가 뒤섞이게 되었다.
이에 옥책 내함의 제작 연도를 확인하는 작업은 고궁박물관의 <2013年 御冊 調査 事業>에서부터 시작되었고, 필자는 이 사업에 참여 후 지속적인 연구를 통해 내함 250 여점 중 지금까지 120점의 제작 연도를 밝힌바 있다. 제작 연도를 밝힌 내함은 1649년-1902년에 해당되었기 때문에 본문에서는 17-19세기의 옥책 내함으로 한정하여 서술하였다.
본 논문은 이 120점을 기준으로 내함의 형식 특징과 변화양상에 주목한 것이다. 내함은 왕실 목공예품으로서 경공장과 도화서 화원이 참여하였고, 주칠과 니금의 고급 재료를 사용하여 제작되었다. 그리고 의궤라는 방대한 자료가 뒷받침하고 있는 제작 연도를 알 수 있는 편년 유물로서 그 미술사적 가치는 뚜렷하다. 또한 옥책 내함의 연구는 목공예와 금속 공예· 칠공예의 공예적인 측면 뿐 아니라, 칠 표면의 화려한 니금 그림 장식은 회화사적인 편년 자료로서도 역시 중요할 것이다. 더불어 논문에서는 120점에 준한 편년 연구에 기초하여, 내함 외 왕실에서 주관하여 제작한 목공예품의 제작 연도를 밝히는 활용 연구 방안을 새롭게 제안하였다.
이와 같은 옥책 내함의 편년 연구는 왕실공예품인 옥책 내함의 미술사적 가치와 의의를 설명해 줄 수 있을 것이며, 본문에서 언급한 내함의 역할과 의미 그리고 제작 배경을 통한 그 역사적인 위상 또한 내함의 연구 가치를 강조해 줄 수 있을 것이라 기대한다.

영어초록

An Inner Case of a Book Made of Jade is a wooden container where a Books Made of Jade was stored. Because the container was encased in an additional container, it was named “Inner Case” according to the Royal Protocols. Unlike its Outer Case, an Inner Case was decorated with golden pigment over its lacquered body.
During the Joseon Dynasty, Books Made of Jade and their cases were made at the same time for the installation of the queen and the royal ritual in which the king and the queen assumed honorific titles. After the king passed away, each of the cases of the Books Made of Jade that the king had been previously bestowed were loaded in a colored palanquin and enshrined in the Spirit-tablet Chamber of the Royal Ancestral Shrine during the Enshrinement Ceremony. Books Made of Jade functioned as the symbolic support for royal authority, since they record royal virtues. Thus, their Inner Cases as well as the books themselves were greatly cherished, and the people and materials involved in making them and their appearance were documented in the Records of the Royal Ancestral Shrine including the Royal Protocols.
Currently, the National Palace Museum of Korea holds around 250 pieces of Books Made of Jade and their cases. They were made from 1545 to the first half of 1900s, according to the production dates recorded in the Books Made of Jade. The records also tell when each of their Inner Cases was produced. However, over the prolonged history of their transmission, some of the Books Made of Jade and their Inner Cases were substituted or replaced by different ones, and this brought confusion in establishing the chronology of the Inner Cases.
Thereupon, it was initiated to investigate the production years of the Inner Cases with the 2013 Project of Inspecting Imperial Books in the National Palace Museum of Korea. The author has been conducting research about the Inner Cases ever since the project, and identified the production years of 120 pieces among the 250 pieces held in the museum. Those whose production dates have been confirmed were made between 1649 and 1902, and thus the present paper analyzes only the Inner Cases from seventeenth to nineteenth centuries.
This article focuses on the stylistic development of the Inner Cases of the 120 pieces. Inner Cases of Books Made of Jade are invaluable as art historical materials in several aspects. As the Inner Cases were made for the royal court, Seoul craftsmen and painters in the Royal Academy of Painting were involved in its production; high-quality materials including lacquer and powdered gold were invested; they were documented in the massive historical records Uigwe; their production years are identifiable; the golden painting on their lacquered surfaces could provide crucial evidences not only for the study of crafts in wood, metal, and lacquer, but also for the research about the chronological development of painting in the same period; and lastly, they could be utilized in reconstructing the chronology of wooden crafts made for the royal court other than the Inner Cases.
In the end, this study about the chronology of the Inner Cases of the Books Made of Jade illuminates the art-historical significance of the Inner Cases as well as their historical value by investigating the role they played, the importance they carried, and the ways in which they were produced.
