일본 카메라메이커들의 성쇠프로세스에 관한 사적고찰 (A Historical Study on the Growth and Decay Process of Camera Makers in Japan)

초록

본 연구는 카메라산업이 필름카메라 시대로부터 디지털카메라 시대로 넘어가는 전환기에 성장과 생존에 성공한 일본 카메라 메이커와 실패하여 쇠퇴한 일본 카메라 메이커를 비교분석함으로써, 기업의 성장프로세스와 쇠퇴프로세스의 모델과 그 특징들을 도출하여 차후 실증분석에서 가설로 활용할 몇몇 명제를 제시하는데 목적을 두고 있다.
이를 위해, 먼저 성쇠프로세스, 즉 성장프로세스와 쇠퇴프로세스와 관련된 선행연구들을 검토한 뒤 이를 바탕으로 본 연구의 분석틀을 설계하였다. 그 다음, 성장프로세스의 연구대상인 캐논카메라와 쇠퇴프로세스의 연구대상인 미놀타카메라의 사적자료들을 근거로 상기의 분석틀에 따라 각각 단계별로 경영성과까지 분석을 시도하였다.
그 결과, 캐논카메라의 성장요인은 ‘필름카메라시대에서 디지털카메라시대로의 전환기에 ① 환경변화에 대한 신속하고 정확한 인식, ② 환경변화에 신속하고 적합한 대응전략의 수립, ③ 추진력 있고 효율적인 전략실행 등에 있다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이에 대해 미놀타의 쇠퇴요인은, ① 환경변화에 대한 인식부족, ② 그에 따른 대응전략의 지연, ③ 전략실행의 한계 등에 있다는 것을 알 수 있었다.
이러한 사례분석을 통해서 도출된 명제는 ① 환경변화에 대한 인식단계에서는 신속성과 정확성이 성패를 결정지으며, ② 대응전략수립 단계에서는 신속성과 적합성이 성패를 결정한다. 그리고 ③ 전략실행 단계에서는 추진력과 효율성이 성패를 좌우하며, ④ 경영프로세스의 각 단계에서 발생하는 장애요인에는 내적장애와 외적장애가 존재한다는 것이다.
아울러, 환경인식 단계에서부터 전략실행 단계에 이르기까지 경영프로세스의 각 단계에서 발생하는 오류와 장애를 극복하면 지속적인 성장이 가능하다는 것을 알 수 있었는데, 이를 본 연구에서는 ‘성장프로세스’라 정의하였다. 그러나 이들을 극복하지 못하면 쇠퇴의 길로 들어서게 되는데, 이를 ‘쇠퇴프로세스’라 정의하였다.
이 연구를 통해서 관련 연구자 또는 기업인들에게 기업조직의 쇠퇴징후를 사전에 진단하게 하여 성장의 실패 또는 쇠퇴의 길을 사전에 예방하는데 있어서 유익한 자료를 제공할 것으로 기대한다.
그러나 본 연구의 한계점으로는, 분석대상의 사례가 각각 1개사에 한정되었다는 점이다. 따라서 본 연구를 통해서 도출 및 제시된 상기의 명제들을 일반화시키는 데에는 제한적일 것이다. 이는 차후 추가적인 사례 도입 및 연구로 보완할 것이다.

영어초록

This study present the models and characteristics of the growth process and the decline process in the corporate, and several propositions related to these by comparative analysis of growth and decline cases of Japanese camera makers in the period of transition from the age of film camera to the age of digital camera.
First, the analytical framework of this study was designed on the basis of previous research related to the growth process and the decline process. Next, according to the above framework, step analysis was attempted to management performances on the basis of historical data for Canon’s growth process and Minolta’s decline process.
As a result, we realized that Canon’s growth factors are the rapid and accurate recognition for environmental change, the rapid and appropriate confrontation strategy for environmental change, and the propulsive and effective strategy execution in the period of transition from the age of film camera to the age of digital camera. On the contrary, we realized that Minolta’ decline factors are the lack of awareness for environmental exchange, the delay of confrontation strategy for environmental change, and the limits of strategy execution.
This study drawn four propositions from the analysis of these cases. Firstly, the speed and the accuracy determine the success or failure in the step of awareness of environmental change. Secondly, the speed and the suitability determine the success or failure in the step of confrontation strategy establishment. Thirdly, the driving force and the efficiency determine the success or failure in the step of strategy execution. Fourthly, the internal obstacles and the external obstacles occur to the steps of management process.
In addition, we realized what it is possible to continue the growth when corporate overcome the obstacles. we define such process as growth process in this study. But then realized what it is impossible to continue the growth when corporate can’t overcome the obstacles. we define such process as decline process in this study.
We expect to provide useful data which researchers and business men diagnose previously the signs of the decline of corporate organization and prevent previously going to the failure of growth or the way of decline.
However, the limitation of this study is that the target of analysis was limited to each one corporate, and it will limited to generalize above propositions. This limitation of study will be complimented through the addition of introduction instance and additional study.
