미국이주 한인들의 문화적응에 대한 내러티브 연구 (A Narrative Study on the Meaning of Korean Immigrants’ Acculturation in the United States)

초록

본 연구의 목적은 미국이주 한인들의 문화적응의 의미를 깊이 있게 탐색하고 이해하는데 있다. 연구참여자는 유목적 표집 추출 방법에 의하여 미국이주 한인 7명을 선정하였으며, 자료수집 기간은 2014년 9월부터 2015년 8월까지 약 12개월 동안 이루어졌다.
자료분석을 통해 연구참여자들의 이야기를 내러티브적으로 코딩하고 주제를 전개하였다. 미국이주 한인들의 문화적응의 의미는 ‘사막’으로 은유되었다. 미국이주 한인들의문화적응 경험은 ‘설레는 여정의 시작’이자 ‘새로운 곳에서의 당찬 포부’를 의미하는 동시에, 사막에서의 낯선 여정이 이어지면서 드러나는 ‘끝이 보이지 않는 고립감’과 ‘생존을 위한 투쟁’, 그리고 ‘계속되는 도전’ 등의 ‘험난한 사막의 실체’를 함께 담아내고 있다.
이와 같은 본 연구의 결과는 미국이주 한인들의 관점에서 그들의 문화적응 삶에 대하여이해하는데 보다 생생하고 풍부한 자료를 제공하고 있다. 각기 다른 모습으로 미국문화에 적응해가는 미국이주 한인들의 이야기와 문화적응의 의미가 무엇인지 심층적으로 살펴본 본 연구의 결과는 향후 미국이주 한인들의 문화적응을 위한 기초적 자료로 활용될것으로 사료된다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to deeply understand the meaning of Korean immigrants’ acculturation in the United States. Narrative inquiry which is one of the qualitative research methods was used to analyze the results. Seven Korean immigrants were selected by using criterion-based selection and provided with their experiences and stories of acculturation.
The entire data collection period was about 12 months from September 2014 to August 2015. The data were collected through in-depth interviews. In order to analyze the data, the recorded in-depth interviews were transcribed. In addition to the interviews, other unofficial communications with the participants, such as e-mails, telephone calls, text messages were also analyzed. The participants’ stories were coded narratively by adding time and space, person, and events in the past, present, and future to the flow of the stories under the main research theme of Korean immigrants’ acculturation in the United States.
After the stories were coded, each participant’s story was restructured. The meaning of the experiences shared by the participants was found by classifying and analyzing the narrative stories. The meaning of the acculturation in each participant’s story was expressed through the metaphor of “desert.” In this study, “desert” is used as a metaphor for the Korean immigrants’ acculturation process. Experience of the Korean immigrants’ acculturation process, which is likened to “desert,” is “brightness of the desert” and it also means “darkness of the desert.” This study provides more vivid and rich materials to understand Korean immigrants’ acculturation process from their perspective. This study would also extend the understanding relating to the meaning of Korean immigrants’ acculturation process in the United States.
