영재들이 겪는 문제에 대한 사례 연구 (Case Studies on Social and Emotional Problems of the Two Gifted Elementary Students)

초록

지금까지 국내 영재교육은 영재교육프로그램 제공과 같이 지적발달을 촉진할 환경의 확대에 주력해왔다. 그러나 영재들의 정서ㆍ사회성 면에서의 지원은 소홀했다. 이에 본 연구는 교육청 영재교육원에 다니고 있는 두 명의 초등영재에 대한 사례연구를 통해 이들이 개인적 특성이나 대인관계로 인해 겪는 문제들을 조명하고자 하였다. 연구 결과 이들은 비동시적 발달, 장점이 대인관계에서 갈등을 유발하는 동시적 문제, 영재성과 ADHD를 동시에 가지는 이중적 예외성과 같은 문제를 겪고 있음이 드러났다. 그리고 이러한 문제들은 부모와 교사의 부적절한 대처에 의해 악화되어 영재학생의 생활과 정서발달에 부정적 영향을 끼칠 수 있음이 밝혀졌다. 학교와 가정은 영재학생들의 학습 및 인지적 차원에서의 탁월함 이면에 존재하는 여러 문제를 주시하고 이들의 건강한 성장을 위해 공조해야 할 것이다.

영어초록

This study pursues to illustrate the affective development of gifted students. Two elementary gifted students facing social and emotional struggles with peers and teachers are featured in two within case studies and a between case study. Using methods for qualitative, data collected through interviews with students, parents, and teachers and letters with teachers. The fourth grader is at risk for his asynchronous development and dual exceptionality. His immaturity in behaviors disappointed teachers and they regarded him a troubled student. Adults including his parents and teachers failed to recognize his behaviors associated with ADHD. Teachers' and peers' rejections and negative reactions resulted in the gifted student's isolation and loneliness at school. The fifth grader's high self-esteem caused a teacher's misunderstanding of his behaviors and rejection to him. His strong expression of dislike caused another issue. He tried to manipulate friends to play a joke on a classmate. His teacher was disappointed and came to keep him at a distance.
This case study manifested the negative effects of teachers' responses on students affective development. To support gifted students emotional needs, parents and educators should understand that gifted students who is ahead of his or her age mates in intellectual area is not always ahead emotionally and socially and that the giftedness can bring concomitant problems. Also, parents and educators should understand that the giftedness can exist with disabilities like ADHD and make every effort to provide intervention to the gifted students with this dual exceptionality.
