Emotion development study of children in two-dimension model of emotion

초록

This study is intended to examine how the discrimination of facial expressions develops with the age of children in 2D model of emotion. The model is of two dimensions, pleasure vs. displeasure, arousal vs. sleep, where emotions are categorized in the point where the one crosses with the other. A group of study comprised 107 children in total, aged 48-, 60-, and 72-month-old. They were allowed to look into 26 photos that had 13 facial expressions, emotionally strong or weak, and to pick out facial expressions related to 13 emotional terms. Used were the photos which strength was previously evaluated in 2Ds (pleasure-displeasure, arousal-sleep) on a 9 point scale. The experiment results give that the distribution of emotion becomes more refined with increasing age. 48-month-old children were clustered closely because of discrimination difficulty between the emotions. 60-month-old children developed more than 48-month-old children in discrimination of displeasure emotions. 72-month-old children developed more clear as compared to children aged 48 months and 60 months in discrimination between the emotions. In analysis of dimensions of this distribution group, most of emotions such as sadness, anger, fear, satisfaction and hope showed discrimination between the emotions in pleasure-displeasure dimension. In arousal-sleep dimension, emotions like comfort and anger showed discrimination between the emotions. It can be analyzed that the distribution of children's emotion becomes more similar to the distribution of adult's emotion in higher amount of explanation for the pleasure-displeasure dimension compared to that for the arousal-sleep dimension with increasing age.
