Perspectives of Teachers on the Use of Assistive Technology with Students with Disabilities

While positive outcomes of Assistive Technology (AT) for students with disabilities have been documented and the intent of U. S. legislations focus on ensuring the use of AT for the education of students with disabilities, the challenges and issues that have arisen in this constantly changing field of technology in education has also been documented. The purpose of this study was to examine perspectives of special education teachers in providing assistive technology services for students with disabilities, given the laws that dictated AT consideration in the current U. S. educational system. Results of a survey involving 98 special education teachers in a Midwestern metropolitan city indicate that while the majority of the teachers believe AT is beneficial, more than half of them feel that they do not have adequate knowledge to fulfil the intent of the federal legislation on providing AT services to students with special needs. Perceived barriers to AT use and implementation is discussed.
