글로벌 가치 사슬 관점에서의 한국 포맷 산업 글로벌 경쟁력 분석 : 언스크립티드 포맷(Unscripted Format) 분야를 중심으로 (An Analysis of the Global Competitiveness of the Korean Format Industry from the Perspective of the Global Value Chain Focusing on the Field of Unscripted Format)

초록

본 연구는 언스크립티드 포맷(unscripted format) 분야를 중심으로 2010년대 이후 약 10여 년간 한국 포맷 산업의 변화를 글로벌 가치 사슬 이론을 바탕으로 산업 구조 측면에서 한국 포맷 산업의 구조 변화를, 기업 측면에서 국내 방송 콘텐츠 기업의 대응 양상을 분석했다. 그리고 이를 통해 한국 포맷산업이 글로벌 포맷 시장에서 경쟁력을 가지고 있는지에 대해 살펴보고자 했다.연구 결과 한국 포맷 산업은 어느 정도 글로벌 경쟁력을 갖춘 것으로 보인다. 우선 포맷 창작 역량에 있어 세계적인 경쟁력이 있음이 이후 지속적으로 이어진 포맷 거래 실적이나 거래 형태의 다변화를 통해 확인되었다. 그리고 국내 방송 콘텐츠 기업들의 포맷 비즈니스 역량이 높아지고 있고, 독립 제작사 영역에서 포맷 비즈니스에 참여하는 새로운 기업이 등장하기도 했다. 2009년부터 꾸준히지원해 온 정부의 포맷 육성 지원 정책도 일정 부분 기여했을 것이라 평가받기도 한다. 하지만 긍정적인 면만 있는 것은 아니다. 현재 K-포맷이 글로벌 시장에서 좋은 평가를 받는 것에 비해 수익성이나 수출 규모가 미치지 못하기 때문이다. 따라서 한국 포맷 산업의 글로벌 경쟁력을 지속시키고 강화시키려면 포맷 비즈니스 수익성 개선과 거래 규모 확대에 초점을 맞춰야 한다. 그리고 여기에 대한 개선 방안을 업계와 정부가 함께 고민한다면 한국 포맷 산업은 더욱 발전할 수 있을 것이다. 한편, 본 연구는 국내외 포맷 관련 통계 자료에서 스크립티드 분야와 언스크립티드 분야가 명확하게 구분되지 않는 경우가 있어 이에 따른 바이어스(bias)가 발생할 수 있다는 점에 유의해야 한다.

영어초록

This study analyzed the changes in the Korean format industry for about 10 years sincethe 2010s, the structural changes of the Korean format industry in terms of industrialstructure, and the response of Korean broadcasting content companies in terms ofcompanies. And through this, I tried to examine whether the Korean format industry iscompetitive in the global format market. As a result of the study, the Korean format industry seems to have some global competitiveness. First of all, the global competitiveness in format creation capabilities was confirmed through rising format transactionperformance and diversification of format transaction that continued after <King ofMask Singer>. In addition, domestic broadcasting content companies are increasingtheir format business capabilities, and new companies participating in format businesshave emerged in the area of independent producers. The government's policy to support Korean format industry, which has been steadily supported since 2009, is also considered to have played a role in this as well. But there are not only positives. This is because K-format is currently well-received in the global market, but its profitability andthe scale of exports are not good. Therefore, in order to continue and strengthen theglobal competitiveness of the Korean format industry, the focus should be on improvingthe profitability of the format business and expanding the size of the transaction. And ifthe industry and the government consider ways to improve this together, the Koreanformat industry will be able to develop further. On the other hand, it should be notedthat this study may cause bias because there are cases where the scripted and unscripted fields are not clearly distinguished from the statistical data related to domesticand foreign formats.
