정부초청 장학생을 위한 플립드 러닝 활용 말하기 수업의 실제 —D대학을 중심으로— (The practical use of flipped-learning in speaking class for the government —sponsored scholars-KGSP—)

초록

최근 한국어를 배우려는 학습자의 양적 증가와 함께 국립국제교육원에서는 세계의 우수 한 인재를 초청하여 장학하고, 글로벌 인재를 양성하겠다는 목적으로 정부초청 장학생 선 발 제도를 운영하고 있다. 정부초청 장학생들은 한국에 오기 전에 자신이 원하는 대학교, 대학원을 미리 선택하여 한국에 오게 되는데, 그 학교에 진학하기 위해서는 반드시 한국어 능력시험 3급 이상을 이수해야 한다.
이에 정부초청 장학생들의 한국어교육을 담당하는 각 대학에서는 이들의 한국어능력시 험 3급 합격을 위해 노력하고 있다. 하지만 시험을 대비하기 위한 수업이 증가하면서, 현 수업에 대한 학습자의 불만이 늘어났고 이를 보완하기 위한 대책이 필요하게 되었다.
본 연구는 한국어능력시험을 준비해야 하는 현 상황에서 의사소통능력 향상을 위한 한 국어수업을 어떻게 운영할 것인가에 대한 고민에서 시작되었다. 먼저 설문지를 통해 학습 자 요구분석을 실시하였다. 그 결과, 말하기 수업이 더 많았으면 좋겠다는 의견이 가장 많 았고, 학습자들은 책에서 배운 한국어를 교실 밖에서 실제로 말할 수 있기를 원한다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이에 학습자 요구 사항을 만족시키고 수업 시간에 더 많은 실제적 말하기 연습을 하기 위해 말하기 수업에 플립드 러닝을 시도해 보았다.
연구 대상은 현재 D대학에서 한국어를 공부하고 있는 정부초청 장학생(대학원 진학) 18 명이다. 이들을 대상으로 약 2개월 동안 플립드 러닝을 활용한 말하기 수업을 진행해 보았 다. 수업 교재는 본 대학에서 사용하고 있는 교재이며, 교재의 진도에 맞추어 동영상 강의 는 ‘누리 세종학당’사이트의 동영상 강의를 활용하였다.
본 연구는 부족한 한국어 말하기 수업을 조금 더 효율적으로 진행하고자 하는 의도에서 시작되었다. 겨우 2개월 동안 18명의 학습자를 대상으로 진행한 연구인데다가 플립드 러닝 의 결과나 효용성은 수업 이해도와 만족도를 조사한 설문지로 대신할 수밖에 없었다.
그러나 본 연구의 대상자인 정부초청 장학생들의 경우, 학업에 대한 의지가 강하며 자기 주도적 학습이 가능한 학습자이기 때문에 이들을 대상으로 한 플립드 러닝은 성공적이었다고 볼 수 있다. 18명의 학습자가 모두 이공계 전공자인 데다가 연령이 비교적 많은 편이라 서 기존의 수업에서는 수업 이해도나 참여도에 학습자 간 차이가 많았다. 기존의 강의식 수 업에서는 소극적인 학습자, 학업이 부진한 학습자의 경우 수업 내용을 교실에서 바로 이해 하는 것이 어려웠다. 그러나 플립드 러닝을 통해서 소극적인 학습자도 수업 시간에 적극적 이고 능동적인 참여자가 되었으며, 미리 수업을 듣고 교실에 오기 때문에 학업이 부진한 학 습자도 수업에 대한 이해도가 높아지고 한국어에 대한 흥미도 늘었다는 것을 알 수 있었다.

영어초록

With the recent increase in the number of students learning Korean language, the National Institute of International Education (NIIED) has been organizing the Korea Government Scholarship Program (KGSP) inviting outstanding students from around the world to study in Korean universities. Before coming to Korea, the KGSP scholars were asked to choose their desired university for undergraduate or graduate studies. However, before entering their chosen university, it is mandatory for every student to have at least TOPIK level 3.
Therefore, the universities in-charge of the Korean language education is striving for the students to get at least TOPIK level 3. However, the students start complaining as the number of classes’ increases which is compulsory for the preparation exam. A countermeasure is needed in order to address their issue.
This research was started with the concern on how to organize the Korean Language classes to improve for TOPIK preparation considering the present situation. Firstly, the student’s demands have been gathered through a survey. The survey results showed that there are many opinions to add more speaking class. We can see from the result that the students want to speak the language they have learnt from the books, not only in the classroom but also outside the classroom. In order to meet the demands of the students, the flipped-learning has been attempted.
The subjects of this study are 18 scholars (graduate level) who are studying Korean language at D University. The flipped-learning have been conducted on these subjects for about 2 months. The teaching materials are the same book used in the mentioned university and for the video lectures the videos from ‘Nuri Sejong Hakdang’ site were used. If the contents were not available at ‘Nuri Sejong Hakdang’, ‘Go Animate’(www.goanimate.com) site was used, where one can make their own video for lecture purpose.
The students were given class materials like handouts and videos by the teacher to prepare before they come to class. During the class, the teacher checked the preparation of the students and if they have any questions the teacher would answer them. After that, the videos were used to conduct the actual task (speaking activities). The class concluded with feedbacks of the teacher and classmates for their presentation. Supplementary learning was also done after the class.
This study was started with the intention of making the Korean language speaking class more effective. In just 2 months with 18 scholars as subjects, the result and usefulness of flipped-learning were replaced by questionnaires that examined the level of understanding and satisfaction of the class. However, this research was successful as the subjects of the research were the Korea Government Scholarship Program (KGSP) scholars and their self-directed learning were very strong. The subjects were from natural sciences and engineering major and their age gap were comparatively large, so there were many differences in the class, like level of understanding and participation in the class. Therefore, in case of passive and weak students it was difficult for the teacher to make them understand the lesson’s content in the classroom. However, through flipped-learning, the passive students became more active in the class, and even the weak students’ understanding level increased and found more interest in learning the language.
