미니멀리즘 관점에서 본 헤르조그 & 드 뫼론과 피터 줌토르의 물성 표현에 관한 연구 (Study on the Expression of Material Properties in terms of Minimalism with Analyzing Works by Herzog & de Meuron and Peter Zumthor)

초록

건축의 전 역사를 통해 재료에 대한 관심은 항상 있었으나 근대건축 이후로 재료와 그 물성의 표현은 중요한 인식의 대상이 되었다. 특히 20세기 후반부터 공간디자인에서 감성적 접근에 대한 관심이 커짐에 따라 재료의 물성에 대한 중요성이 더욱 크게 인식되었고, 특히 최소한의 표현을 통해 환원적 본질을 나타내려는 미니멀리즘 건축에서의 물성은 가시적으로 드러나는 주된 요소로서 더욱 주목을 받았다. 즉 절제된 형태의 표피가 갖는 재료와의 관계에서 미니멀리즘 건축의 특성이 설명된다고 할 수 있기에 미니멀리즘 계열의 작가에게 재료의 물성은 핵심적 관심의 대상이었다. 따라서 미니멀리즘 경향의 건축이 재료의 물성적 표현에 더 크게 영향을 받을 수 있다는 전제 아래, 선행연구를 통해 미니멀리즘 건축에서의 물성 표현 특성을 정리해보고, 그런 특성이 실제 건축 작품에서 어떻게 표현되고 있는지를 실증적으로 검토해보기 위해 사례분석을 진행하였다. 연구 결과, 물성적 표현 특성은 물질적 특성과 비물질적 특성으로 크게 분류되고, 물질적 특성은 다시 솔직성, 단순성, 축조성, 반복성 등 4가지 항목으로, 비물질적 특성은 투명성, 교란성, 매체성 등 3가지 항목으로 재분류하였다. 이런 재료의 물성은 건축가가 어떻게 인식하고 표현하는지에 따라 다양한 양상으로 나타난다. 따라서 분류된 특성의 실제적 적용성을 검토하기 위해 재료의 물성에 관심이 큰 미니멀리즘 계열의 건축가로서 물성에 대한 접근 방법에서 독창성이 돋보이는 헤르조그 & 드 뫼론과 피터 줌토르의 작품을 분석 대상으로 선택하였다. 분석 결과 두 작가 모두 물질적 특성과 비물질적 특성이 혼재되기는 하지만 헤르조그 & 드 뫼론의 작품에서는 가공과 변형을 통한 비물질적 특성이 주로 나타났고, 피터 줌토르의 경우에는 재료 본연의 물성을 강조하는 물질적 특성이 주로 부각되었다.

영어초록

Though the architectural concern about materials and their properties has been continuously discussed throughout history, the expression of material properties has been more recognized since Modern Architecture. Furthermore, as emotional approach in spatial design has become major issue since the late 20th century, the importance of material properties has been more highly emphasized. Particularly, material properties in minimalism architecture, which tries to represent reductive essence through minimum expression, received more attention as the main visually revealed element. In other words, since the characteristics of minimalism architecture can be explained in the relation with the materials of surface in the temperate manner, material properties are a core object of attention for the minimalist architects. According to the context, research was developed to extract the characteristics of the expression of material properties through advanced related researches, and then, case analysis was done to view practical application. The results of research, in this context, on the expression of material properties in minimalism architecture are as followed: the characteristics of the expression of material properties are classified roughly into material characteristics and non-material characteristics; material characteristics are classified into 4 expressive features such as frankness, simplicity, constructiveness, and repeatability, and non-material characteristics are classified into 3 features such as transparency, disturbance, and intimation. Such material properties are represented in diverse forms according to how the architects perceive and express them. Accordingly, case study was conducted to examine the actual applicability of those classified characteristics. As the objects of the case analysis, the works of Herzog & de Meuron and Peter Zumthor, who have great interest in material properties and show very creative approaches in applying material properties to their projects, were chosen. The results of the analysis show that material characteristics and non-material characteristics were both present in their works, but more non-material characteristics through processing and transformation were represented in the works of Herzog & de Meuron while more material characteristics that emphasize the intrinsic properties of materials were represented in the works of Peter Zumthor.
