일제시기 동대문 일대의 사회･경제적 개발과 특징 (The Socio-economic Development and Characteristics of Dongdaemun Area during the Japanese Rule)

초록

일제시기 동대문 일대는 사회･경제적인 개발을 통해 다양한 역할을 수행했다. 이를 세 가지 층위에서 살펴보면 첫째, 동대문 일대는 대중교통의 결절지로 기능했다. 식민지 자본주의의 성장과 주거 문제의 악화 속에서 주거와 일터가 분리되는 경성의 교외화 현상은 시간이 갈수록 두드러졌다. 그 결과 시내･외를 연결하는 간선 도로가 통과하고 궤도차의 순환선과 외곽 노선이 분기하는 동대문 일대는 광역 교통의 중심지로 떠올랐다. 도심과 동부 지역을 오고가는 수많은 유동 인구로 북적이는 동대문 일대는 경성의 주요 교차로 중에서 최대의 교통량을 자랑했다.
둘째, 동대문시장이 소재한 동대문 일대는 조선인 상권의 거점이었다. 1905년에 설립된 동대문시장은 광장주식회사의 자본금 확충과 더불어 주변 토지를 매수하여 구역을 확장하는 동시에 점포를 증축했다. 동대문시장에 입주한 상인은 점진적으로 증가했고 노천 장터에서 영업하는 행상도 수백 명에 달했다. 1920년대 이후 새롭게 등장한 도･소매시장과의 경쟁 속에서 한동안 침체를 겪었던 동대문시장은 여타의 도매시장이 폐지되는 1930년대 후반부터는 유일한 조선인 본위의 시장으로서 호황을 맞았다.
셋째, 동대문 일대는 문화 통치의 최전선으로 역할을 다했다. 1920년대 이후 동대문 일대에 자리한 훈련원 부지는 식민 권력의 물적 토대로 작동했다. 관유지로서 규모가 컸을 뿐만 아니라 교통이 편리하고 지형이 평탄했기 때문이다. 이곳에는 다양한 교육 기관과 사회 시설이 들어섰다. 전자의 대표적인 사례로는 조선의 유일한 약학 관련 고등 교육 기관인 경성약학전문학교, 초등 교원 양성 체계의 정점에 위치한 경성사범학교가 있었다. 후자와 관련해서는 가난한 조선인의 주거 대책으로 설립된 부영주택, 천황제 이데올로기의 상징물로서 건립된 경성운동장, 소득이 낮은 계층의 열악한 의료 환경을 개선하려는 목적에서 운영된 경성부립부민병원이 있었다.

During the Japanese occupation, the Dongdaemun area played a variety of roles in its socio-economic development. First, the Dongdaemun area functioned as a nodal point for public transportation. The phenomenon of suburbanization in Gyeongseong, which separated living and working areas, became more and more prominent over time. As a result, Dongdaemun area, where the main road connecting the city and the countryside passes through, and where the circular line of the railroad car and the outlying routes diverge, emerged as a center for regional transportation. With a large number of people traveling to and from the city center and the eastern part of the city, Dongdaemun area boasted the largest traffic volume of any major intersection in Gyeongseong.
Second, the Dongdaemun area, where Dongdaemun Market is located, was a stronghold of Korean commerce. Established in 1905, Dongdaemun Market expanded its area by purchasing surrounding land and expanding the number of stores, along with raising the capital of the operating company, Gwangjang Corporation. The number of merchants moving into Dongdaemun Market increased, and the number of hawkers operating in the open-air market reached hundreds. After experiencing a period of stagnation in the 1920s due to competition from newly emerging wholesale and retail markets, Dongdaemun Market boomed in the late 1930s as the only market for Koreans when other wholesale markets were abolished.
Third, Dongdaemun area served as the frontline of cultural control. From the 1920s onward, Dongdaemun area served as the physical foundation of colonial power. This was not only because of its large size as a government- owned land, but also because of its convenient transportation and flat terrain. Various educational institutions and social facilities were built here. Typical examples of the former were the Gyeongseong Pharmacy College, and the Gyeongseong Normal School, the pinnacle of the primary teacher training system. The latter included the Public Housing, which was established as a housing measure for poor Koreans, Gyeongseong Stadium, which was built as a symbol of the emperor's ideology, and Gyeongseong Civil Hospital, which aimed to improve the poor healthcare conditions of those with low incomes.
