초록

고전 인문학의 대중화 작업은 무조건 바람직한가? 논자는 그렇지 않다고 생각한다. 인문학이 대중과 손잡기 위해선 최소한 세 가지 조건이 구비되어야 한다고 믿는다. 첫째, 대중의 상업 문화에 수동적으로 제휴해선 안 된다. 둘째, 대중을 계몽의 대상으로 전락시켜선 안 된다. 셋째, 특정 소수 계층의 지적 향락을 위한 키치 문화가 되기를 거부해야 한다.
인문학이 대중들을 깊이 있는 사유의 세계로 초대하여 궁극엔 인문적으로 각성시키고 그들을 동료로 맞이할 자세가 갖춰져야만 진지한 대중화 작업이 시작될 수 있다. 이는 언뜻 계몽운동의 변형처럼 보이겠지만 대중을 하향적 포고의 대상으로 간주하지 않으며 정치적 의도를 은폐한 채 특정 계급의 이데올로기를 전파하려 하지도 않는다는 점에서 다르다. 현재 잘못된 고전 대중화가 보수적 전통 이념을 상업적 의도에 결합시켜 유통시키고 있다는 점을 신중히 간파해야 할 필요성이 여기 있다.
논자는 동아시아 역사 자산의 대중콘텐츠화가 동아시아 범위의 새로운 아시아 정체성 찾기와 연관된다고 생각한다. 따라서 한반도에만 고착된 인문학 부흥 작업은, 비록 졸렬한 수준이라 할 순 없지만, 근본적으로 국수주의 색채로부터 자유로울 수 없다고 확신한다. 결국 논자는 동아시아 역사 자산 가운데 중앙아시아를 포괄하는 범 아시아적 소재를 찾기 위해 노력했고, 마침내 고려를 방문했던 인도 승려 지공을 발견했다.
불교는 12세기에서 14세기에 이르도록 아시아 대륙을 채웠던 정신문화의 보고였으며, 이 문화의 행정을 따라가다 보면 세계제국 몽골과 우리가 모르던 고려 역사가 새롭게 부각된다. 작게는 한반도 불교 법통설의 내막에서부터 넓게는 불교와 이슬람 사이의 갈등 양상에 이르기까지 다양한 동아시아 역사 현장이 지공과 연결된다. 논자는 이 정보들을 소설 양식으로 구현하고 그 과정을 미리 공개함으로써 인문학 대중화의 또 다른 대안적 가능성을 학계에 보고했다.

영어초록

The popularization of the classical humanities is unconditionally desirable? I think it isn't. The tree conditions should be equipped for the alliance between humanities and the public at the least. The first, humanities should not join passively with the commercial culture of the public. The second, we have to pay close attention not to transform the public into the object of the enlightenment. The third, the humanities should refuse to be the kitsch culture for the intellectual pleasure of the particular class.
The genuine popularization could be started when the humanities invite the public into the world of deep speculation and ultimately rearouse them through accepting as colleague. Of course, it seems a variation of a classical enlightenment movement but it couldn't be same in the point that this view don't regard the public as the object of downward proclamation and also don't intend to prevail the ideology of some particular class concealing political intention. At present, we have to penetrate closely that the wrong popularization of classical humanities circulate conservative traditional ideas by combining with commercial intention.
We think that the pop-contentization of East Asian historical resources could be related with the project for finding new asian identity in the range of pan asian culture. So, the renaissance projects of humanities sticking to Han peninsula, though it couldn't be clumsy, could not free from chauvinism basically. At last we concluded that we should select pan asian episode covering middle asian culture among east asian historical resources, and found out Jigong who had visited in Koryo kingdom as the last Indian buddhist monk in 14th centuries passing through Sri lanka, middle asia, Tibet, and Mongolian empire "Won".
The buddhism have been a treasury of spiritual culture prevailed over Asian continental from 12th century to 14th century, so we can encounter with the world wide empire Mongolian Yulus and the history of Koryo kingdom we have ignored through following these cultural road. Jigong's historical life was related with the inner story of the religious tradition about Buddhism in han peninsula and with the conflict aspects between Buddhists and Muslims etc. We had established these historical episodes in the form of novel reporting an another alternative possibility in the popularization of humanities to the academic world by opening to the public these course of planning and writing.
