근현대 세계경제와 동아시아모델: 캘리포니아학파를 중심으로- (Modern World Economy and East Asian Model: Focusing on California School)

초록

20세기 후반 이래 중국과 동아시아는 정치경제적 팽창을 거듭하면서 세계헤게모니 국가인 미국을 대체하는 세력권으로 급부상했다. 이러한 무한한 성장활력은 서구학계에서 세계체제 분석상 ‘근대화(modernization)—서구모델’을 이탈해 ‘탈근대화(postmodernization)—동아시아모델’을 설정하고 그에 대한 다양한 담론들을 생산하는 계기가 되었다. 본 연구에서는 근대 세계경제(세계체제) 맥락에서 산업혁명을 의제로 전개된 서구모델, 대분기(Great Divergence)론 등을 선행적으로 검토했다. 그런 다음 캘리포니아학파의 담론지형을 중심으로 동서양의 두 발전경로를 비교, 분석하고 이를 기초로 탈근대적 ‘동아시아모델의 동학(the dynamics)’을 추적해 현재화하고자 했다. 근대 ‘서구식 체제모델’은 (동)아시아를 유럽적 역사표준의 타자로 격하시키고 서구의 지배권력을 정당화하기 위해 만들어지고 확장된 단일중심체제다. 따라서 캘리포니아학파(California School)가 ‘동아시아모델’ 연구를 통해 세계보편사로서 다중심의 상호 연결된 세계상을 확립하고자 한 시도는 의미심장하다.
캘리포니아학파의 수정주의 연구자들은 ‘스미스형 동력(the Smithian Dynamics)’을 명제로 근면혁명론, 원공업화론 등을 비판적으로 재구성하면서 산업혁명 이전 중국과 동아시아의 경제를 유럽보다 더 고도화한 스미스형 성장(the Smithian Growth) 단계에 있었다고 판단했다. 그리고 이것은 서구학계에서 ‘노동집약적(labour-intensive) 산업화로서의 동아시아발전경로’로 집약, 유형화된다. 더불어 오늘날 중국과 동아시아의 급부상이라는 현상분석과 그 미래전망, 곧 근대(성)모델에 대한 서양의 독점을 폐기하려는 다선적ㆍ다중적 근대(성)모델의 제시로까지 이어진다. 무엇보다 근대 산업문명과 미국 헤게모니를 비판하면서 동아시아를 친환경의 노동집약적 대안문명으로 격상시켜 논구한 점들은 특기할만하다. 요컨대 동서양 두 체제의 융합을 지향하는 수정주의 그룹의 연구는 21세기형 주체적이고 탈근대적인 ‘동아시아식 체제모델’을 구상하는 데 유익한 지식토대가 될 것이다.

영어초록

Since the late 20th century, China and East Asia have been rapidly rising as the sphere of influence to compete with the United States, the country with hegemony, through the repeated economic political expansion. This infinite growth engine deviated from ‘modernism – Western model’ and set the ‘post modernism – East Asian model’ in the Western academic world, serving as a momentum for creating various discourses over it. In the context of modern world economy(world system), this study preveniently reviewed the Western model and Great Divergence developed based on the Industrial Revolution. Then developing pathways of the East and the West based on the discourse of California School were compared and analyzed to trace and modernize the postmodern ‘dynamics of the East Asian model’. The modern ‘Western system model’ is a unity-centered system created and expanded to relegate (East) Asia to the subject of the European history standard and to justify ruling power of the West. Thus, it is meaningful that California School attempted to establish a multicentric and interconnected view of the world through studies of the ‘East Asian model’.
The revisionism researchers of California School critically recasted the theory of the Industrious Revolution and proto-industrialization based on the Smithian Dynamics, and judged that the economy of China and East Asia before the Industrial Revolution was in the Smithian growth stage, which was much more advanced than Europe. This integrated and categorized into ‘the developing pathway of East Asian as labor-intensive industrialization’ in the Western academic world. It further leads to phenomenon analysis and future outlook on sudden rise of China and East Asia, suggesting a multilinear and multiple modern(modernism) model’ to abolish the West’s monopoly on the modern(modernism) model. Most of all, it is noteworthy that their studies elevated East Asia as the eco-friendly labor-intensive civilization while they criticized the modern industrial civilization and U.S. hegemony. In short, the studies of the revisionism group that aims for convergence of the Eastern and the Western system will be a valuable knowledge foundation to formulate an independent and postmodern ‘East
