동·서양의 관점에서 본 비움(Empty Image)에 관한 고찰 (A Study of Empty Image from the Perspective of Eastern and Western World.)

초록

가속화된 산업화로 범람하는 정보화 시대에 문자와 이미지로 가득 찬 그래픽 디자인은 오히려 심미성(審美性)과 가독성(可讀性)을 저하시키는 요인으로 작용한다. 이러한 이유로 시각디자인에서 비움(empty image)에 대한 조형요소의 필요성을 인식하여 본 연구가 시작되었다. 본 연구에서 비움(empty image)은 동양철학의 노자가 전(傳)하는 비움(emptiness)의 철학적 의미가 아닌 비워진 여백 공간으로써 조형적 요소를 말하며 시각적 비움으로 한정한다. 본 연구는 동·서양을 참조체계 삼아 동양과 서양의 다른 관점으로 비움을 바라봄으로써 비교 분석하여 비움의 본질과 근원을 파악하고자 한다. 따라서 본 연구에서 비움을 조형요소로 간주하고 비움의 전개과정과 발현, 양태를 살펴본 다음, 의도적 비움의 표현내용, 표현방법, 표현효과를 분석한다. 이를 토대로 동·서양의 비움의 표현을 비교분석 하여 비움의 본질적 근원을 파악한다. 동양에서 비움은 기(氣)가 충만한 살아 있는 공간으로 보았으며 자연 공간 또는 사색의 공간 표현이 주를 이루며 구도법, 필법에 의해 비움을 표현하였고 이를 통하여 득도, 관념을 전달하고 있었다. 반면, 서양의 비움은 다양한 내용을 표현하고 있으며 제로 상태에 가까운 비움, 형태를 나타내는 비움, 비움으로써 다시 채움, 채움과 비움 등 제로 상태의 비움을 부정하였고 새로운 채움이나 형태에 초점을 두었다. 이러한 결과는 다양한 미적 표현을 양산시켰으며 이는 문화적 배경에 기인한다. 그러므로 이 연구를 통하여 비움의 가치와 필요성을 재인식하고 향후 디자인에서 비움의 활용에 기틀을 마련하는 첫걸음이 되기를 바라는 바이며 조형요소로써 비움의 가치와 의의를 규명하는데 의의가 있다 하겠다.

영어초록

The graphic designs that are full of texts and images in the information age are rather working as a factor to reduce aesthetics and legibility due to the accelerated industrialization. For this reason, this study was started in recognition of the needs for formative elements as to the empty image in visual design. The empty image in this study indicates a formative element as an empty blank space rather than the philosophical meaning of empty image set forth by Lao-tzu as for Eastern philosophy. Also, this study restricts the meaning of empty image to visual empty image. This study aims to identify the essential nature and origin of empty image through comparing, analyzing and examining empty image based on the different perspectives of Eastern and Western world by referring to the systems of Eastern and Western world. Thus, this study deems empty image as a formative element and examines the development process, expression and aspects of empty image and then analyzes the contents, methods and effects of the expression of intentional empty image. This study identify the essential source of empty image by comparing and analyzing the expression of empty image of Eastern and Western world based hereupon. The empty image in the East was deemed as a space full of spiritual energy. Also, the expressions for natural space or meditation space accounted for a majority and empty image was expressed by composition and calligraphy. Through this, enlightenment and ideas were being transferred. On the other hand, The empty image in the West expressed a variety of information. Also, it denied the empty image in the state of zero such as re-filling, filling and empty image as an empty image that is close to the state of zero as expressing a shape and focused on new filling or shape. Such results generated a variety of aesthetic expressions and the fact hereof was caused by the cultural background. Therefore, it is expected that this study will be the first step to recognize the value and need of empty image and prepare a framework for the use of empty image in design going forward. This study could be deemed meaningful in terms of identifying the value and meaning of empty image as a formative element.
