동관왕묘 정전 내부 의물 연구 (A Study on the Ritual Artifacts with a Main Building for the East Shrine of King Gwan-u)

초록

동관왕묘(東關王廟)는 중국 촉(蜀)나라의 장수 관우(關羽)를 모신 사당이다. 임진왜란이 끝난 후 중국과 조선의 국왕이 외세를 물리치려는 의지로 동관왕묘를 세웠다. 1599년 8월 조선 정부는 ‘동관왕묘조성청’이라는 관청을 임시로 설치하고 인력과 물력을 총동원하였다. 명나라 기술자의 감독 아래 연 2,400명의 조선 장인과 역군(役軍)들이 중국 해주(解州) 관제묘(關帝廟)를 본으로 삼아 영건하여 3년 뒤인 1602년 봄에 동관왕묘를 완공하였다. 한중 기술자가 협력하여 세웠기 때문에 관왕묘의 정전 건축과 내부 의물에는 양국의 양식이 반영되어 있다. 이를 요약하면 다음과 같다.
첫째, 동관왕묘의 건물은 한중 절충 양식이다. 조선의 전범이 된 것은 세종대에 어진(御眞)를 모시고자 세운 문소전(文昭殿)이었으며, 진전(眞殿)은 정전(正殿)과 배전(拜殿)으로 구성되어 丁자형을 이루는 것이 특징이다. 이를 따른 동관왕묘의 지붕은 丁자형이지만, 동서북쪽의 세 벽을 벽돌로 쌓아 전체적인 평면은 一자 형태이다. 여기에 바깥쪽에 회랑을 돌려 중국의 묘사(廟祠) 건물의 특징도 반영되어 있다.
둘째, 건물의 내부 구조에는 한중의 양식이 절충되어 있다. 관우 조각을 모시기 위해 정전 내부에 감실을 배치하는 형식은 양국에서 일치한다. 그러나 정전 밖에 주렴을 걸거나 감실 앞면에 분합문을 달거나 바닥에 화문석 지의(地衣)를 이중으로 까는 것은 조선 사당의 전통적인 형식을 따른 것이다. 관우에게 제향을 드리는 의식 또한 마찬가지이다. 반면 관우상에게 옷을 입히거나 정전 앞을 면장(面帳)으로 둘러치는 것은 중국식이다. 이처럼 건물의 내부 구조와 의식은 조선의 전통적이지만 부분적으로 중국적 요소가 가미되어 있었다.
따라서 동관왕묘의 정전 건축과 내부 의물은 17세기 초 한중 관왕묘의 원형을 지니고 있다는 점에서 그 미술사적 가치가 매우 크다고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

The East Shrine of King Gwan-u(Donggwanwangmyo) is a place where Gwan-u a military general during the Chok Dynasty in China is enshrined. After the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592, the Chinese Emperor of the Ming Dynasty and the king of the Joseon Dynasty agreed to jointly construct a shrine of King Gwan-u. In August 1599, the Joseon Dynasty set up a provisional government office called ‘the authorities for constructing the Donggwanwangmyo’ which generally mobilized manpower and materials. Under the supervision of technicians from the Ming Dynasty, in the spring of 1602, about 2,400 craftsmen from the Joseon Dynasty completed the construction of the Donggwanwangmyo according to the model of a shrine for Emperor Gwan-u in Hae-ju, China. Buildings and sculptures for the shrine have followed construction styles of both countries, because engineers from the two nations worked together for the construction.
First, buildings of the East Shrine of King Gwan-u are a blend of Korean and Chinese construction styles. Traditionally, T-shaped buildings are used to a shrine (i.e., Munsojeon Shrine) for a portrait constructed in the early part of the Joseon Dynasty. The roof of the Donggwanwangmyo is T-shaped, yet the whole plane for the buildings is 一 shaped since walls made of bricks stand in the east, west and north directions. And corridors are set up around the outside of the walls, which is a feature of a Chinese shrine.
Second, the interior structure of the shrine also represents a blend of Korean and Chinese construction styles. Both of Korean and Chinese construction techniques are applied to the alcove inside the shrine where the sculpture of Gwan-u is placed. And traditional construction features of the Joseon Dynasty are attested in the fact that the alcove has a window and rush mats placed on the floor. A sacrificial rite is offered for Gwan-u in a Korean style as well. In contrast, the sculpture of Gwan-u is clothed in a Chinese style. In a word, the interior structure of the building and rituals are according to traditional styles of the Joseon Dynasty, partly mixed with Chinese styles.
Conclusively, it may be said that the ritual artifacts within a main building of the Donggwanwangmyo are very valuable in the history of art since they retain the original form of a Shrine of King Gwan-u constructed early in the 17th century.
