The royal garden in the Iksan Wanggung-ri Site shows the unique features which can’t be observed in other royal garden landscaping in East Asia until now concerning the aspects of spatial design. Those unique features may come from the landscaping technology of Baekje trying to overcome the difficulty in securing water, the most critical element in landscaping along with the geographical location of the royal palace. Baekje developed its unique creativity by imitating the advanced landscaping technology of China through a continuing exchange with Sui and Tang dynasty as well as several countries in the northern and southern dynasties of China in the 6th and 7th century.
The fruits of such endeavors is the royal garden in the Iksan Wanggung-ri remains. The limits of the royal garden in the Iksan Wanggung-ri Site were the big garden site frequently mentioned in the records related to the Buyeo Gungnamji site and the structure didn’t allow entertainment on a boat in the garden pond. However, such limits enabled Baekje to implement the unique world of the Taoist immortals, which is a utopia in the landscaping skills in East Asia, and to create its unique garden landscaping technology of Iksan, expressly different from that of Buyeo.
However, the royal garden in the Iksan Wanggung-ri Site has lots of challenges to uncover and deal with currently. The continuing existence, functions, or roles of each remain should be examined in detail. The comprehensive review and discussion on them will make us come closer to the true properties of the royal garden in the Iksan Wanggung-ri Site.
