『흙』에 구현된 도산의 정의돈수사상과 유정한 사회에 대한 연구 (Dosan's idea of enlightenment of friendship and a heart-warming society realized in 「SOIL」)

초록

『흙』은 허숭의 이주여정을 통해 조선의 현실이 적나라하게 드러나고, 도산의 정의돈수사상을 구현할 수 있는 유정한 사회 공동체인 모범촌 건설이 구체화되고 있는 작품이다. 따라서 춘원의 용동체험과 러시아 체험이 『흙』에 어떻게 투영되고 있으며, 『흙』에 구현된 무정한 세상을 유정한 세상으로 바꾸려는 노력이 도산의 정의돈수사상과 어떤 관련이 있는가를 밝혀보려고 했다.
『흙』에는 타락한 도시와 조선혼의 근원인 농촌의 이원적 대립구조가 조선인의 이주문제와 긴밀하게 연관되어 서술되고 있다. 동아일보에서 벌인 브나로드운동은 식민지 수탈정책에 맞닿아 있다. 그런데 당시 브나로드운동을 주도하다시피한 춘원이 『흙』에서 일제의 간도이주정책에 순응하지 않고 살여울이나 검블랑에 모범촌을 만들려고 한 것은 주목할 만하다. 조선의 민족 자본이 해체되어 조선의 농민들은 급기야 남부여대하고 간도로 이주하거나 유리걸식할 수밖에 없었다. 조선인이 떠나간 자리에는 일본인들을 이주하여 조선에 정착하게 되었다. 춘원은 1910년대 용동체험의 재현과 일제의 간도 이주정책의 징후를 통해 정의롭고 평화로운 세상을 만들기 위해서 어떻게 해야 할 것인가 하는 화두를 던지고 있다. 조선인의 이주문제와 민족 자본의 해체 문제를 다시 재현해냄으로써 그 사건들이 벌어진 당대의 자리로 고정시켜놓으려는 노력에서가 아니라, 1930년을 살고 있는 작가의 정신과 시선에 의해서 그 사건이 다시 해석될 수 있도록 했던 것이다.
살여울로 돌아온 허숭은 동회와 협동조합 그리고 야학회를 주도한다. 춘원은 자신이 1910년대 용동에서 체험한 바를 바탕으로 용동이 어떤 곳이었고, 자신이 생각하는 모범촌은 어떤 형태의 마을인가를 「농촌계발의견」, 「모범촌」, 「용동」, 「농촌계발」에서 계속적으로 서술하면서 그의 생각을 구체화하고 있다. 「농촌계발」은 「농촌계발의견」, 「모범촌」, 「용동」을 집약하여 발표한 글로 동경 유학생 金一이 판사직을 버리고 金村으로 들어가서 마을 공동체인 동회를 조직하여 협동조합사업과 생활개선운동을 전개하여 金村을 문화적인 부촌인 모범촌으로 만든다. 金村은 도산이 미국에서 구상한 조선을 유정한 사회 공동체로 만들기 위해 제시한 공동체지향주의, 민족우선주의, 정의돈수주의의 집약된 모범촌이며, 『흙』에 제시한 살여울이나 검블랑과 흡사한 모범촌이다. 따라서 춘원의 글쓰기가 민족계몽운동이나 유정한 사회 공동체 조성과 맞닿아 있음을 확인할 수 있다. 아울러 춘원은 이 작품에서 이상적인 농촌마을을 만들어 해외 이주자들을 농촌으로 유인하려는 의도를 드러내고 있다.

영어초록

「SOIL」 plainly reveals the reality of Chosun through Heo Sung's discourse of migration and materializes construction of a model village of a social community, which can realize Dosan's idea of enlightenment of friendship. This study examines how Chunwon's experience in Yong Dong is reflected in 「SOIL」 and how the effort to change the heartless society and tragic reality portrayed in 「SOIL」 into a heart-warming society is associated with Dosan's idea of enlightenment of friendship.
In 「SOIL」, the dual opposition structure of the fallen city and the rural area, which is the origin of Chosun spirit, is closely related to the migration of Chosun people. The V narod movement by Dong-A Ilbo is in line with the colonial exploitation policy. It is noteworthy, however, that Chunwon, who led the V narod movement at the time, attempted to build a model village in Salyeowool or Geomblang without conforming to the Japanese colonialism policy in 「SOIL」. The national capital was dissolved, farmers set out on a wandering life, migrated to Gando or wandered around begging for food. Where Chosun people left, Japanese moved and settled in Chosun. Chunwon raised a question on how to create a righteous and peaceful world through Yong Dong experience and Japanese policy for migration to Gando in 1910s. By re-addressing the issues of migration of Chosun people and dissolution of the national capital, it was not an effort to fix the events of the day, but to allow the events to be reinterpreted by the spirit and view of the writer who lived in 1930.
While Chunwon was teaching at Osan School, he was committed to night school and local community affairs. Therefore, when Chunwon is a teacher at Osan school, he thinks that a series of writings based on the experience of Yong Dong and the experience of migration in Russia is linked with 「SOIL」, which can raise objections to the claim that 「SOIL」 is an ideal novel for enlightenment of the farmers.
Through Han Mingyo and Heo Sung, Chunwon actualized construction of a model village, a heart-warming society that can realize Dosan's idea of enlightenment of friendship. Heo Sung returned to Salyeowool and led local community affairs, cooperative union and night schools. This shows how Chunwon began to write 「SOIL」; it shows actual cases of creating a model village based on Yong Dong experience. However, since it is a rural movement based on non-resistance movement, it may be considered as an ideal novel by an intellect, but it comes from different views on art.
In the context of a series of writing written in Russia in the 1910s, 「SOIL」 shows that Chunwon's writing matches the movement for the national enlightenment and heart-warming society. A model village project for heart-warming society by Chosun youth in Salyeowool was a success, which led to another model village construction project. Heo Sung left everything behind him to return to Salyeowool because Chunwon intended to create ideal farming villages to attract migrants and by spreading the movement, it matches Dosan's idea to grow the national power.
