조선 후기 名勝과 名勝圖 향유 양상― 《韓中名勝圖帖》을 중심으로 (A Study on Scenic Spots and their Landscape Paintings in the Second Half of the Joseon Dynasty― Album of Paintings of Scenic Spots of Korea and China)

초록

전근대기 동아시아 문인지식인들은 名勝을 매개로 한 지적 탐구와 문예활동을 다채롭게 전개하였다. 특히 17세기 이후 조선의 관료문인들이 주도한 명승지 유람과 詩文書畵의 창작 및 향유 양상은 당대 사회의 집단지성과 예술적 지향을 가늠하게 해준다. 영국국립도서관 소장 《韓中名勝圖帖》은 그와 같은 사회문화적 배경 아래 제작된 작품이다. 서두의 詩 한 편 외에 한국과 중국의 명승 경관을 담은 실경산수화 10폭이 실린 이례적 구성의 화첩이다. 그림의 畵題는 ‘關西八景’으로 일컬어지는 평안도 명승들과 충청도 보령 永保亭 같은 국내 명승, 그리고 岳陽樓와 黃鶴樓, 三峽 등 유서 깊은 중국 강남지방의 명승들이다. 한편 화첩을 개장하면서 추가한 詩의 款識에 등장하는 李敦中 집안과 혼맥으로 연결된 徐命膺의 官歷이 충청도와 평안도 양 지역에 걸쳐 있음이 확인된다. 따라서 이돈중과 서명응 집안이 화첩의 제작과 전승에 관여했을 가능성이 높다. 또한 명승도의 구도와 세부 표현법에 나타나는 특징은 18세기 후반에 유행한 화풍과 상통한다. 요컨대 《한중명승도첩》은 국내뿐 아니라 중국의 명승까지 포괄했던 조선 후기 명승문화를 연구하는 데 있어 주목을 끄는 繪畵史料라 하겠다.

영어초록

The literati (intellectuals) of East Asia in the pre-modern era engaged in diverse intellectual explorations and literary activities that focused on scenic spots. Particularly in and after the seventeenth century, scholar-officials of the Joseon Dynasty took sightseeing trips to such scenic spots and practiced the creation and appreciation of poems, prose, calligraphy, and paintings related to the sites. This allows us a glimpse into the collective intelligence and artistic pursuits of the society of the time. This is also the social and cultural background behind Album of Paintings of Scenic Spots of Korea and China in the collection of the British Library. The album’s unusual compilation features a poem at the beginning and ten real-scenery landscape paintings of scenic sites in Korea and China. It includes some of the eight Korean scenic sites around Gwanseo in Pyeongan-do Province and Yeongbojeong Pavilion in Boryeong, Chungcheong-do Province, as well as historic scenic spots in the Jiangnan region of China, such as Yueyang Pavilion, Huanghe Pavilion, and the Sanxia Gorges. When the album was remounted, a poem was added. The signature following the poem includes the name of Yi Don-jung whose family was connected by marriage to the family of Seo Myeong-eung. Seo’s career record indicates that he served as an official both in Chungcheong-do and Pyeongan-do Provinces. Accordingly, it seems highly probable that the families of Yi Don-jung and Seo Myeong-eung might have been involved in the production and transmission of Album of Paintings of Scenic Spots of Korea and China. The composition and depictions of details in this album’s paintings correspond to styles popular in the late eighteenth century. This artwork thus provides a notable historical source for studying the late-Joseon practice of appreciating scenic spots not only in Korea, but also in China.
