Satisfaction and quality of life of adults with disability on the 5th Korean Panel Survey of Employment for the Disabled: Its policy and field practice implications

초록

This study was developed using data from the South Korean Government survey of select and registered persons with disabilities. There are 15 recognized groups of persons with disabilities however the data for this study utilizes three of the primary groups. Data was filtered to include persons with physical disability, brain lesions, and intellectual disability, and to investigate characteristics associated with satisfaction and subjective quality of life in the context of rehabilitation policies and service delivery. Descriptive statistics, regression analysis, and ANOVAs were utilized upon study variables including interpersonal relationships, marriage, leisure activities, and income of research participants. Two thousand eight hundred and one persons with disabilities among a total of 4,297 panel data were analyzed; 2,180 persons with physical disability, 432 persons with brain lesions, and 189 persons with intellectual disability. The data informs us that the group of persons with intellectual disabilities is less satisfied with peer relations and interpersonal relations compared to other disability groups. However, the degree to which research participants with intellectual disability are satisfied with their marital status was much higher than the other two groups. In terms of their income, those with physical disabilities are the highest among the three groups. The results of this study indicate that persons with disability require different policy approaches and strategies to improve their quality of life. However, persons with intellectual disability respond rather passively to each survey questionnaire item when compared to other persons with disabilities. Individualized and specialized service preparations and training upon the clients’ strength-based frameworks are paramount for rehabilitation field practitioners and their consumers, maximizing service benefits. Services need to be based upon users’ unique needs, situation, and wishes. In conclusion it is necessary to plan and devise an effective program for each individual with disability who needs various services based upon the consumers’ perspective.
