초록

This study was conducted over the periods of June 27-29, August 2-5, August 27-29 and September 21-26, 2006, to obtain an overall picture of the way of Streaked Shearwater(Calonectris leucomelas) population that breeds on Sausdo Island, Chuja-myeon, Jeju City, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, and to devise a method for managing the population. A total of 5,952 individual birds from 38 species were observed in this study. What is special about this study is that the breeding behavior of the White-rumped Swift (Apus pacificus) species was confirmed for the first time in Korea, and also that three other species which had not previously been observed on the island, including Osprey (Pandion haliaetus), Eurasian siskin (Carduelis spinus) and Temmincks Cormorant (Phalacrocorax capillatus) were also observed in this study.
The survey also demonstrated that approximately 1,300 pairs of Streaked hearwaters were inhabiting the island, thus reflecting a sharp reduction in their population. Our analysis shows that the reduced population of Streaked Shearwaters was ascribable to worsened environmental quality in the breeding site, including the ruination of their nests, eggs, and chickens, which are helpless against the indiscriminate attacks of the Norway Rat (Rattus norvegicus). The hatching failure of the nests observed was estimated at 56%, of which the rate due to the R. norvegicus stood at an alarming 86.7%. In order to protect the Streaked Shearwater population that breeds on Sausdo Island, it is imperative to launch an all-out drive to exterminate the R. norvegicus population alien to the island, followed up by administrative and financial support, such as follow-up monitoring surveys on a periodical basis.
