A Study on the Characteristics and Values of Unregistered Private House Garden in Gyeongsang-do, Chungcheong-do, and Jeolla-do Province

초록

This study compared and analyzed the characteristics of unregistered private house gardens as cultural heritage in Gyeongsang-do, Jeolla-do, and Chungcheong-do Province, classified the types of gardens, and examined the value of unregistered private house gardens. As a result, the following conclusions were drawn.
First, unregistered private house gardens have historical authenticity as they have a similar construction age to that of state-designated cultural heritage.
Second, the target sites showed locations considering the topography of each region based on the feng shui ideology, and had a spatial structure according to the Confucian ideology. The target sites were classified into back mountain-type, flat land-type, and urban-type location. In the case of an urban-type location, the area originally located in the back or flat area was changed to the current urban area due to urban development, and thus the garden space and outer court were reduced.
Third, the gardens appeared in the form of original succession and change succession. In the case of original succession, there was little change in space, and planting methods were applied and traditional garden components were arranged considering the symbolism of trees in each space. The target sites succeeded by change were mainly consisted of the combination of the owner's preference and the traditional space division.
Fourth, a total of 4 waterscapes appeared in Gyeonsang-do, Jeolla-do, Chungcheong-do Province, and all were created in Sarang-chae(the men’s part of a house) space. The pond was created to be the object of view as a landscape component.
Fifth, as a method to stabilize the slope formed at the back of the Anchae(the main building), the methods of constructing retaining walls, stonework, or flower bed were applied to the target sites, and some were treated as low hills to prevent soil erosion.
