조선시대 경직도의 변천과 그 의미 (The Transition and Meaning of Pictures of Tilling and Weaving (耕織圖) in the Joseon Dynasty)

초록

이 글에서는 역사 기록과 회화 자료를 통하여 조선시대 경직도의 변천 과정과 그것의 의미에 대하여 살펴보았다.
조선 사회에 경직도가 도입된 배경으로는 유교 경전을 중시하고 그것을 시각화하는 관습, 그리고 당시 발달한 중국 강남농법 적용을 통한 농업 기술 제고에 있었던 것으로 보인다.
국왕에게 경직도는 修身과 자신의 정치 이념을 천명하는 도구였다. 영조는 경직도를 왕위계승에서 정통성을 보완하는 기재로 삼았고, 고종은 재위 초기 경직도를 거론함으로써 왕권의 토대를 강화하려 하였다.
왕세자에게는 경직도가 농상의 어려움과 백성의 고됨을 체득하게 하는 중요 자료로 활용되었다. 시강원에서 제작 및 진설을 담당한 회화 자료는 후대의 왕세자에게 전해져 대를 이어 활용되었음이 춘궁일기에서 확인된다. 궁중에서 쓰인 경직도는 조선 후기에 이르면 활용 계층이 확대된다. 예를 들어 윤봉오의 석문집에 따르면, 경직도를 지방 관리가 가지고 농정에 활용하였음을 알 수 있다.
패문재경직도 전래 직후 경직도는 월별로 농가에서 농사짓고 잠직하는 모습이 순차적으로 배열되는 조선식 경직도로 변모하였다. 이러한 도상 변화는 화풍의 영향도 있지만, 예기 「월령」과 시경 「빈풍칠월편」을 조선의 시의와 풍속에 맞게 재정비하려는 노력에서 기인한 것으로 보이며, 숙종의 열성어제와 이옥의 박천집에서 그러한 모습을 살필 수 있다.
경직도가 화목을 넘어 국정운영에서 적극 활용된 것은 조선 사회에서 경직도가 갖는 위상과 의미를 보여준다.

영어초록

This article examines the transition process and meaning of pictures of tilling and weaving in the Joseon dynasty through historical records and painting materials. The review results are summarized as follows.
It appears that the background to the introduction of pictures of tilling and weaving into the Joseon society is the custom of emphasizing Confucian scriptures and visualizing them, and that it was to improve agricultural technology through the application of Jiangnan Farming Methods, which were developed in China at the time.
For the king, pictures of tilling and weaving were the basis (本) of discipline (修身) and a tool to declare his political ideology. King Yeongjo used pictures of tilling and weaving as a means of complementing legitimacy in the succession to the throne, and in the early days of his reign, King Gojong attempted to strengthen the foundation of royal authority by mentioning pictures of tilling and weaving.
For the crown prince, pictures of tilling and weaving were utilized as important material to help him learn about the difficulties of farming and the hardships of the people. It is confirmed in Chungungilgi that the painting records used for production and ritual setting in the education lecture hall were passed down to later crown princes and used from generation to generation. The use of pictures of tilling and weaving in the royal court expanded in the late Joseon period, and according to Yun Bong-oh's Seokmunjip (poetry collection) , it was found that local officials took pictures of tilling and weaving and used them in agricultural policy.
Immediately after the introduction of the Paemunjae_ pictures of tilling and weaving, the pictures of tilling and weaving were transformed into Joseon-style pictures of tilling and weaving, in which scenes of farming and weaving at a farm are sequentially arranged according to the passage of twelve months of the year. These iconographic changes are also influenced by the painting style, but it seems to have originated from efforts to reorganize Wolryeong in Yegi and Binpungchilwolpyeon in Sigyeong to suit Joseon's own timeliness and custom, and such aspects can be seen in King Sukjong's Yeolseongeoje and Lee Ok's Bakcheonjip (poetry collection) .
The reason why pictures of tilling and weaving were actively used in state administration beyond reconciliation shows the status that the pictures of tilling and weaving has in Joseon society.
