디아스포라 소설에서 ‘구조’와 ‘원형’의 의미 - 태 켈러의 장편소설 『호랑이를 덫에 가두면』을 중심으로 (Meaning of ‘structure’ and ‘archetype’ in diaspora novels － Focused on Tae Keller’s novel ‘When You Trap a Tiger’)

초록

본 연구는 <해와 달이 된 오누이>를 모티프로 한 태 켈러의 장편소설 『호랑이를 덫에 가두면』에서 재현되는 민담의 원형과 구조를 조사하였다. 민담 변형의 의미는 무엇이고 디아스포라인 주인공의 정체성을 표현하기 위해 소설이 어떤 형태로 구조화한 지에 대해 분석을 시도하였다.
세계화가 진행되면서 디아스포라에서 정체성에 대한 질문이 문학으로 확대되거나변주되어왔다. 태 켈러는 민족 주체의 운동성에 관심을 가지고 민담을 새로운 시각으로 변형하였고 주체의 정체성이 익숙하지 않은 공간 안에서 디아스포라 문학이 민담의 원형을 어떤 방식으로 구조화하는지에 주목했다.
신화의 시간과 공간이 역사를 초월하여 존재하는 것과 달리 민담의 시간과 공간은역사 내에서 존재하며, 민담이 지향하는 교육적, 문화적 가치를 생각할 때 친연성이확고하다는 것을 알 수 있다. 텍스트에서 <해와 달이 된 오누이>는 민중의 보편적 정서와 공동체적 세계관을 담았으며 당대의 사회적 가치를 내면화한 재미있는 이야기로 민족적 심성의 원형이 잘 드러난 민담이다. 신화적 요소를 포함한 민담은 민족의보편적 정서를 담고 있어서 디아스포라의 도달할 수 없는 고향 또는 안식처에 대한갈망과 정체성에 대한 불안이 소설에서 신화의 원형과 조화를 이루고 구조화되었다.
민담이 이야기꾼에 의해 외적인 형태가 계속 변화되었으나 민담 고유의 구조 틀인 원형은 그대로라 하겠다.
태 켈러의 소설 『호랑이를 덫에 가두면』을 텍스트로 하여 민담의 원형과 소설의 구조가 디아스포라의 정체성을 찾는데 어떤 의미인지 조사하고, 블라디미르 프로프의인물 기능과 행위분석으로 구조를 비교 분석하여 디아스포라의 정체성이 소설에서어떤 방식으로 드러나는지 살펴보았다. 이 작업을 통해서 디아스포라 문학의 정체성연구 영역이 넓어지기를 기대해 본다.

영어초록

This study investigated the prototype and structure of folk tales reproduced in Tae Keller’s novel ‘When You Trap a Tiger’ with <Sister and Brother who became Sun and Moon> as a motif. An attempt was made to analyze the meaning of the folktale transformation and how the novel was structured to express the identity of the diaspora protagonist.
As globalization progresses, the question of identity in the diaspora has been expanded or transformed into literature. Takeller was interested in the mobility of the national subject and transformed the folktale into a new perspective, paying attention to how diaspora literature structures the prototype of the folktale in a space where the identity of the subject is unfamiliar.
Unlike the time and space of myths that transcend history, the time and space of folk tales exist within history, and when considering the educational and cultural values that folk tales aim for, it can be seen that their affinity is firm. In the text, <Sister and Brother who became Sun and Moon> is a folktale that contains the gen eral sentiments of the people and a communal worldview, and is an interesting story that internalizes the social values of the time, revealing the prototype of the national spirit. Folktales including mythological elements contain the universal sentiments of the nation, so the diaspora’s longing for an unreachable hometown or haven and anxiety about identity are harmonized and structured with the prototype of the myth in the novel. Although the external form of folktales has been continuously changed by the storyteller, the original structure of folktales remains the same.
Using Tae Keller’s novel ‘When You Trap a Tiger’ as the text, we investigated what the prototype of folk tales and the structure of the novel meant to find the identity of the diaspora, and compared and analyzed the structure with Vladimir Propp’s character function and behavior analysis. We examined how the identity of the diaspora is revealed in the novel. It is expected that the field of identity research in diaspora literature will be expanded through this work.
