번역과 다시 쓰기로 만들어진 더글라스 맥아더의 영웅상 - 맥아더의 『대회고록』과 그를 소재로 한 위인전들을 중심으로 (Douglas MacArthur’s heroic image in South Korea made by translating and rewriting)

초록

더글라스 맥아더에 대한 평가와 해석은 역사적 맥락에 따라 전변하였으며 대개 논쟁적이었지만, 남북통일의 문제와 한국전쟁의 상처를 안고 있는 남한 사회에서는 그렇지 못했다. 본 논문은 맥아더의 이미지가 고정되는 과정과 맥락을 그가 1964년에 발표했던 회고록을 중심으로 살펴봤다. 맥아더의 회고록은 번역과 위인전이라는 문학적 글쓰기를 통해 1964년부터 2000년대까지 남한 사회에 다양한 방식으로 수용됐다. 번역이나 다시 쓰기는 포스트모더니즘 계열의 사유에서 고정된 진리를 교란하고 다양성을 확장하는 실험적인 활동으로 인정받아 왔지만, 맥아더의 회고록과 관련된 일련의 다시 쓰기 활동은 맥아더에 대한 영웅적이고도 우애로운 이미지를 반복적으로 강화했다. 국내에는 맥아더의 회고록과 관련된 5종의 번역서와 다수의 위인전이 발표되었는데, 이것들은 저마다의 개성을 지니지만 모두 맥아더의 영웅적인 서사를 반복 재생산해왔다는 점에서 공통점을 지닌다. 특히 국역본들은 미국의 맥그로우힐 판보다는 일본의 아사히신문사 판 번역서를 참조함으로써 전웅 맥아더라는 이미지와 타자를 환대하는 우애로운 맥아더의 이미지를 동시에 강화할 수 있었다. 더불어 『맥아더』라는 동일한 제목으로 발표된 다수의 위인전들 역시 맥아더의 회고록만을 진실의 권위적인 텍스트로 받아들임으로써 맥아더에 대한 다른 해석과 이해는 이루어질 수 없었다. 이로써 국내에 번역되고 위인전으로 다시 쓰인 맥아더는 논쟁과 비판이 거세된 영웅 맥아더의 이미지만을 강화했다.

영어초록

Douglas MacArthur served in the Army for 52 years and he especially built his military career in Asia for more than 30 years. As you can easily suppose with his extraordinarily long career, public opinions about his thought, behavior, talent, and so forth are very controversial by changing the historical context. However his heroic image has not changed for a long time in South Korea. Both his long career in Asia and his Asia First Strategy made many Korean understand that he was the only man who could solve problems associated with the unification of North and South Korea and the Korean war. This article concentrates on five Korean translations of MacArthur’s Reminiscences and many biographies for children published in South Korea. These texts have been produced by translating and rewriting since 1960s. Postmodern theory supports translating and rewriting as a literary experiment that can deconstruct the only one Truth and make diverse opinions. Unlike this kind of postmodern thought, many texts produced by translating and rewriting Reminiscences served to make the permanent image of MacArthur. Besides his heroic image, a warm and friendly image to others such as Asian, God, and diverse colleagues could be made by translating and rewriting. Since all the Korean translators depended on the Japanese version of Reminiscences. There were some differences between English version published by McGraw-Hill and Japanese version by Asahi newspaper, and they influenced the Korean versions to make MacArthur’s image as a benevolent hero. Many biographies for children were also published in South Korea since 1970s. They were produced by rewriting Reminiscences but treated it as the only authentic text for truth. So, although there are many kinds of biography, they all were very similar to each other. This paper reveals the process of translating and rewriting Reminiscences and proves the context fixing the MacArthur’s heroic image in South Korea.
