초록

Clothes appearing in mural paintings in the Yao Dynasty era are considered as valuable material that can concretely explain Kitan garments, typical lifestyles and living conditions. In the first half of the period, the mural paintings in the Yao Dynasty era were focused on portraying attendants, and these were heavily influenced by the Tang Dynasty era. In the middle and latter part of the dynasty, mural paintings were focused on depicting Kitan aristocrats and many other figures based on diversified themes. Many mural paintings showed the Kitan clothes and the Han clothes at the same time, and the latter, more Han coats and the longer.
According to History of the Yao Dynasty, which examined clothes depicted in the mural paintings in the era of Yao Dynasty, there is duality in the Kitan clothes and the Han clothes. The appearance of clothes in mural paintings excavated in the Yao Dynasty indicates that these were actually worn. Mural paintings found in Inner Mongolia pertain to the entire Yao Dynasty era, and showed the Kitan clothes and the Han clothes. Mural paintings found in Xuanhe in Hebei Province were drawn later than those found in Inner Mongolia, and these featured many clothes worn by the Han. Meanwhile, the Kitan clothes are characterized by a leftward upper garment and pants, narrow sleeves and boots. Officials and maids wore leftward Han clothes now and then. Attendants wore their hair in a bob or got a partial haircut and had Kitan clothes on.
Mountain paintings showed women dressed like men. Ornaments for the hair and clothes worn by ladies and maids depicted in paintings have their origin in the colorful clothing worn in the Tang Dynasty. The Kitan clothes appearing in the mural paintings in the Yao Dynasty era were strongly characterized by nomadic costume factors befitting hunting based on a partial haircut, short coat, narrow sleeves, leftward garments, a belt, and nomadic pants with gusset and boots. The Han clothes, featuring leftward clothing, narrow sleeves, a belt and boots, were influenced by the Kitan clothes. The shape, texture, colors and patterns of the Kitan clothes indicate that they were nature-friendly and had a close relationship with a nomadic hunting life. Thus, a duality existed in the Kitan clothes and the Han clothes based on exchanges with China.
