남해 대국산성 성격 (Characteristics of Daeguk Mountain Fortresse in Namhae)

초록

본고에서는 발굴조사를 통하여 확인된 성벽과 연지의 축조수법 및 내부출토 유물과 더불어 대국산성의 형태와 위치, 해발고도, 규모, 성벽 및 부속시설의 축조수법 등을 통하여 대국산성의 축조시기와 성격을 파악하고자 하였다.
분석 결과 대국산성은 7세기 초반경에 축조되었을 가능성이 높으며, 남해도에는 삼국시대와 통일신라시대에 대국산성, 성산토성, 임진성, 성고개성, 비자당산성 등이 축성되었음을 확인하였다.
각 산성들은 남해군을 둘러쌓듯 배치되어 있으며, 이 시기 남해도에는 내해와 외해의 해로를 감시 및 통제하기 위한 축성이 이루어졌을 가능성이 높다.
한편, 대국산성은 남해도 지역 산성들 중 최대형이라는 점, 내해를 감시하기 유리한 지역에 축조되었다는 점, 남해도에서 육지와 가장 가까운 곳에 축조되었다는 점 등으로 보아 남해도의 거점성으로 군사적ㆍ행정적 중심적 역할을 담당하였음을 알 수 있다.
따라서 남해 대국산성의 전야산군이 설치되기 이전 7세기 전반에 축조되어 대 백제전의 전초 기지와 행정 치소의 기능을 수행하였으며, 신문왕대에 설치된 전야산군의 치소 역할을 계속 수행하였을 가능성이 높다.
대국산성 이후의 치소는 대국산성 남쪽의 성산토성이 주목된다. 성산토성은 기단석을 두고 판축을 하였는데, 이는 사천 선진리성과 유사한 축성법이다. 위치 역시 내만한 바닷가의 낮은 구릉 정상부이므로 조망권 확보에 불리한 지역이다. 그러므로 군사적인 기능보다는 행정적 치소로 축조되었을 가능성이 높다.
따라서 대국산성은 성산토성이 축조되는 시기에 치소의 기능을 상실하고 성산토성의 배후 산성으로 기능이 변하였을 것으로 판단된다.

영어초록

In this study I attempted to find out the construction period and nature of Daeguk Sanseong(mountain fortresse) through research on its shape, location, height above sea level, dimension, construction method of rampart and auxiliary facilities, and through review of data on building method of rampart and lotus pond as well as relics inside the fortress which were already confirmed by excavation research.
As a result of my study I confirmed it highly probable that Daeguk Sanseong was constructed in early 7th century A.D. I also confirmed that a number of mountain fortress such as Daeguk Sanseong, Seongsan Toseong(mud fortress), Imjin Seong(fortress), Seonggogae Seong, Bijadang Sanseong had been built in Namhae island during 3-Kingdom era and Unified Silla dynasty.
Each of the above mentioned mountain fortress is located surrounding Namhae county, which leads us to surmise that fortress building in Namhae island at that time might have aimed to monitor and control the sea routes (either to inland sea or open sea).
In addition I could confirm that Daeguk Sanseong was a stronghold in Namhae island, serving focal point both militarily and administratively, which can be derived from the facts that it is the largest one among the mentioned mountain fortresss, and that it is located at a place most convenient to supervise inland sea, and that it is built nearest to inland from Namhae island.
In view of the above, it is assumed that Daeguk Sanseong had been built in the first half of the 7th century A.D. and before Jeonyasan-gun (former administrative district of Namhae) was established, and that Daeguk Sanseong functioned as a ruling place cum advance base of war against Baekjae kingdom. It is highly probable that after Jeonyasan-gun was established in King Sinmun era, the fortress continued to function as the ruling place.
Seongsan Toseong(mud fortress) located at southern part of Daeguk Sanseong is a notable candidate as the ruling place substituting Daeguk Sanseong. Seongsan Toseong was built of earth wall with podium, which is similar method of fortress building as Seonjinri Seong in Sacheon county. The Toseong is located at the peak of low hill near small seaside, but its location is not good to command bird's-eye view of surrounding area, therefore the Toseong might have been built only for administrative ruling purpose, rather than for military function.
Accordingly, Daeguk Sanseong seems to have lost it function as the ruling place when Seongsan Toseong was built. The function of Daeguk Sanseong was transformed into a rear fortress of Seongsan Tosung, in my opinion.
