김삼의당(金三宜堂)의 생애와 한시(漢詩)에 담긴 유교적 인식 (On confucionista recognize of Lifetime and Chiness poem of Sanuidang Kim)

초록

주체적인 의식을 가진 여성으로서의 자각 현상이 서서히 자리 잡기 시작한 조선 후기에서도 여전히 여성의 문학이나 학문적 활동에 대해서는 부정적 시각이 지배적이었다. 특히 언어로써의 보편적 기능을 상실한 채 남성의 전유물이 된 한자를 이용한 창작 활동에 있어서 여성들의 소외현상은 더 극심하였다. 이러한 때 전북 남원에서 태어난 金三宜堂(1769∼1823)은 몰락한 향촌사족 출신으로 엄격한 유교적 전통의 생활 규범을 배우며 자랐고, 孝, 敬, 順從이라는 세 가지 근본덕목을 인생관으로 삼았다. 그리하여 여성 억압적 사회구조임에도 굴하지 않고 현모양처·효부라는 당시 여성의 역할에 충실한 가운데 주체적 존재라는 자긍심을 가지고 꾸준히 한시 창작활동을 한 독특한 인물이다. 그리하여 여성으로서는 가장 많은 작품을 남긴 것으로 추정되는 『三宜堂金夫人遺稿』 문집을 통해 99편(총 253수)의 방대한 양의 한시와 22편의 문장을 남겼다. 조선조 양반가 여성들이 자신의 시작품을 남기지 않으려 했던 것에 비하여 삼의당은 자신이 시를 짓는 목적과 방법을 당당히 「自序」에 밝혔으며, 이를 바탕으로 다수의 작품을 남기고 있다는 점에서 뚜렷한 시의식을 바탕으로 참 나를 주체적으로 자각하고, 적극적으로 자아를 실현해 나갔음을 알 수 있다.
같은 마을에서 생년월일이 같은 몰락한 양반가 출신인 담락당 하립과 결혼한 그녀는 혼인 첫날밤부터 남편과 화답시를 쓰는 등 일상생활의 애환을 남편과 꾸준히 시문으로 화답하던 詩友관계이기도 했다. 그녀의 문학을 형성시킨 배경은 시댁의 남다른 문학적 분위기와 남편의 이해, 그리고 그녀가 살았던 남원과 진안의 아름다운 풍경을 들 수 있다. 그녀의 한시는 특히 자신의 인생행로를 솔직담박하게 사실적으로 묘사하고 있어 자서전적인 성격이 강하다. 그녀는 결혼 초부터 몰락한 가문의 입지를 되찾고 가문의 부흥과 시부모의 榮進을 위해 남편의 과거시험 뒷바라지에 전력하였다. 그리하여 남편이 山寺와 서울로 유학한 약 십여 년간 부부는 생이별을 하는 동안 궁핍한 생활을 꾸려나가기 위해 아녀자의 몸으로 서민층과 완전히 부합되는 고된 농사일과 생계를 책임져야만 하였다. 그러기에 그녀의 의식세계나 생활상, 사물과 이를 통해 느낀 시적 인식과 감성 등은 여타 양반가 부녀자와는 상당한 차이가 있다. 향촌사족의 여인으로서 삼의당은 이러한 제반 악조건을 극복하면서 가슴 속에 담아놓은 깊은 정한과 사연들을 꾸준히 漢詩를 통해 정화·승화시켰다.
삼의당은 자신의 생활상을 중심으로 한 주변상황이나 실제 일 등을 모두 주제나 소재로 채택하고 있다. 양반가 아녀자로서 유교적 삶의 근본강령인 三綱五倫 뿐만 아니라, 서민과도 다름없는 가정살림을 이끌어 가야하는 고단한 삶 속에서 느꼈던 시부모 봉양, 농사일, 세시풍속, 마을 주변의 풍경, 주변인물, 동물 등의 조선적인 소재를 통해 立身揚名의 勸勉詩, 離別情恨의 閨怨詩, 그리고 安分知足의 田園詩 등 다양한 내용과 형식의 창작활동을 하였다.
그녀는 남편의 立身揚名만이 부모에게 드리는 최고의 효도라고 이해하고, 헌신적으로 남편을 뒷바라지 하였다. 과거 준비를 하는 남편에게 보내는 서간문에서는 자신의 감정을 철저히 배제한 채 오로지 면학에만 힘쓸 것을 거듭 강조하고 격려하는 勸勉詩가 주류를 이룬다. 하지만 閨怨詩에서 보듯이 다른 양반가 여인들에게서는 볼 수 없는 대담한 표현을 사용하여 이별의 情恨과 벗어날 수 없는 고단한 현실의 매 순간순간을 탄식처럼 시로써 절규하였다. 이는 비록 몰락한 향촌사족의 여인일지라도 자신의 처지와 환경을 적극적·주체적으로 수용하여 진솔하게 자신의 감정 표현에 충실했음을 보여주는 것으로써 삼의당 한시의 가장 두드러진 특징이기도 하다. 또한, 남편의 등과 실패로 인해 진안으로 이거한 이후에는 安貧樂道하는 삶을 형상화 한 田園詩를 주로 썼다. 전원의 실경과 농사일의 흥취를 감정이나 사변적인 현상 보다는 소박하고 감각적이며 실제적 묘사로 담박하게 진술하면서도 조선적인 정서와 정취를 담아내려 노력하였다. 그리하여 이들 소재들과 자신과의 자연친화적 정서 교감을 한시를 통해 物我一體의 미의식을 드러내고 있다. 다만, 다루는 소재나 주제가 여성의 기본적인 생활 범주를 벗어나지 못하거나 약간 색다른 주제를 다루었다 하더라도 개인적 소망이나 가정사를 넘어 사회적 문제에까지 시선을 돌려 여성한시 문학의 범주를 대사회적 영역으로 확장하려는 시도는 특별히 보이지 않는 점은 어쩔 수 없는 표현의 한계로 남는다.
