『청구야담』 소재 노비담에 나타난 ‘위선과 기만’의 양상과 의미 (Diverse Aspects of ‘Hypocrisy and Deception’ in Slave-servant Stories of CheongguYadam and Their Meaning)

초록

이 연구는 『청구야담』 소재 노비담에 나타난 노비들의 위선과 기만의 양상과 의미 를 탐색하는 것을 내용으로 한다. 조선 후기, 중세적 신분질서를 고수하고자 하는 지 배층과 신분질서의 억압으로부터 벗어나고자 했던 피지배계층의 갈등과 대립이 격화 되었는데 그 중심에 있던 것이 노비였다. 이 시기 노비들은 불합리한 제도와 부당한 대우에 맞서 때론 강력하게 투쟁하기도, 때론 온건하게 저항하기도 하였으며, 때론 그들만의 방식으로 타협과 화해를 시도하기도 하였다. 본 연구에서는 이 같은 노비들 의 다양한 대응이 위선과 기만으로 표출되는 양상에 주목해 보았다. 『청구야담』 소재 노비담에 나타난 노비들의 위선과 기만의 첫 번째 양상은 노주간 의 갈등과 대립이 격화되는 상황에서 자유를 얻고자 하는 의지의 실천으로 나타났다. 신분제도의 문제점을 인식한 노비들은 스스로 신분제의 구속에서 벗어나는 길을 택 했는데 그것이 주인에 대한 배신과 도망이었으며 도망 노비를 추쇄 나온 주인에 대한 살인 모의 등으로 표면화되었다. 노비담에 나타난 위선과 기만의 두 번째 양상은 권 력과 부를 향한 도정에서 자신의 욕망을 실현하기 위한 위장술로 나타났다. 도망 노 비들은 양반으로 신분을 세탁하고 어렵게 획득한 명성과 부를 유지하며, 종신토록 자 신의 정체가 탄로 나는 것을 막고자 끊임없는 위계와 술수로 세상을 속이는 모습을 보여주었다. 노비담에 나타난 위선과 기만의 세 번째 양상은 부조리한 현실에서 배태 된 분노와 울분이 불특정 지배층 양반을 향한 사기와 농락으로 표출되는 방식으로 나 타났다. 지배계층의 위선과 사회 전반의 부조리를 목도한 노비들은 순종하기를 거부 하고 양반을 속여 재물을 빼앗거나 양반들을 농락하는 것으로 양반의 권위를 해체하 고 부조리한 사회에 저항하는 모습을 보였다.

영어초록

This study aims to investigate diverse aspects of hypocrisy and deception in slave-servant stories of CheongguYadam and their meaning. In the late Joseon Dynasty, conflicts between the ruling class who wanted to preserve the medieval social status order and the ruled class who wanted to break away from the suppression it imposed on them intensified, with slave-servants at the center. In those days, the slave-servants struggled sometimes fiercely and sometimes moderately against the irrational institutions and unjust treatment; sometimes, they tried to compromise and reconcile in their own ways. This study focuses on how the various reactions of the slave-servants to these changes were displayed as hypocrisy and deception. The first aspect of hypocrisy and deception the slave-servants show in the relevant stories of CheongguYadam is practical determination to win their freedom with the intensifying conflicts between the slaves and their masters at the background. The slave-servants who recognize the problems of Joseon’s status system chose to break away from it for themselves, which meant that they betrayed their masters and fled. Sometimes, their determination surfaced as conspiracy to murder their masters who had come to chase the fugitive slaves. The second aspect of hypocrisy and deception in slave-servant stories is camouflage to fulfill their own desires while on the road to power and wealth. Fugitive slave-servants went through identity laundering to become yangban, guarded their hard-won reputation and wealth, and constantly deceived the world for their lifetime to prevent their true identities from being exposed. The third aspect of hypocrisy and deception in slaveservant stories is anger and resentment born out of irrational reality, which surfaced Abstract as deceiving and cajoling a certain person in the ruling class. Slave-servants who witnessed the ruling class’s hypocrisy and the overall irrationality of the society refused to obey and decieved yangbans to take their properties and wheedled them; thus, they dissolved the yangbans’ authority and resisted against the irrational society.
