베트남 원혼서사의 성격과 복수담—『傳奇漫錄』의 경우 (Characteristics of Vietnamese Vengeful Ghost Narratives and Tales of Revenge - The Case of Jeongimanlok)

초록

이 글은 베트남 전통서사를 일견하는 차원에서 원혼이 등장하는 서사를 중심으로 그 성격을 밝힌 것이다. 동아시아 초기서사에서 매우 흥미로운 위치를 차지하고 있는 베트남 전통서사의 면모를 ‘원혼’과 ‘복수’라는 코드로 접근한 사례다. 주요 대상 작품은 베트남의 대표적인 전기집인 『전기만록』이다. 이 작품이 원혼서사로서의 성격이 농후하다는 점을 주목한 것이다. 이에 앞서 전통시대 베트남 서사가 대결구도가 활성화되어 있으며, 원혼이 등장하는 이야기가 많다는 점에 착목해 보았다. 이런 전통은 『전기만록』에서 확장/심화되는 경향을 보이는데, 원혼의 실체가 다채로울뿐더러 복수담이 개입하면서 그 자체로 서사의 난맥상을 구축하고 있다. 그럼에도 여기 원혼들은 원혼이 된 계기가 天命과 人事로 크게 대별되고, 그에 따른 원혼의 행위와 성격도 나뉜다. 주로 인사로 인한 원귀들은 복수를 하려 들고 이 과정에서 처단의 대상이 됨으로써 전도된 현실을 여지없이 노정한다. 전란 등에 따른 시운에 의한 죽음은 한편으로 해원의 대상이 되기도 하나, 인사에 의한 원혼들의 횡행이 ‘사회악’으로 규정됨으로써 심중한 문제를 던진다는 점이 『전기만록』에 구현된 원혼서사의 성격이다. 이런 원혼서사의 복수와 해원의 길항성은 베트남의 굴곡진 역사와 왕조교체기의 대내외적 정치와 사상투쟁이 맞물려 빚어낸 결과였다. 베트남 역사에서 북쪽의 중국과 남쪽의 참파와의 갈등은 陳朝에서 黎朝로 넘어가는 과도기에도 여전했으며, 또한 이때는 불교사회에서 유교사회로 전환되는 시기였다. 이 대혼란과 전환의 시기에 내몰린 민인들은 걸핏하면 원혼으로 떠돌아야 했다. 천명이건 인사이건 이들 원혼들은 베트남 사회의 대내외적 응전의 산물이며, 이는 베트남 사회와 민인이 처한 패러독스이기도 했다.

영어초록

This paper reveals the characteristics of vengeful ghost narratives after looking at traditional Vietnamese narratives. It also approaches Vietnamese traditional narratives with concepts such as “vengeful ghost” and “revenge,” which take an interesting place among the early East Asian narratives. As it is imbued with the characteristics of vengeful ghost narratives, this paper mainly focuses on research of the representative Vietnamese biography Jeongimanlok. In the beginning, this paper focuses on the fact that Vietnamese traditional narratives had an active confrontational structure and that there were many stories involving vengeful ghosts. In Jeongimanlok, there was a tendency to expand and deepen that characteristic and there were various instances of the vengeful ghost or tales of revenge that were included in the story, thus establishing disorder in the narrative itself. Nevertheless, the vengeful ghosts were largely classified into two categories depending on the reasons for death: natural circumstance and human circumstance, and their behavior and personality were divided individually as well. Vengeful ghosts whose death was caused by human circumstances tried to take revenge, and during that process they became a subject of judgement and undoubtedly exposed to an inversed reality. Death caused by natural circumstances such as war however, could relieve the ghost’s resentment, but the embodied characteristics of vengeful ghost narratives in Jeongimanlok spoke of the vengeful ghosts’ behavior as causing critical problems as they were referred to as a “social evil.” The antagonism between revenge and resolution in vengeful ghost narratives resulted from confrontation among Vietnam’s difficult history, domestic and foreign politics during the royal transition and ideological conflict. In Vietnamese history, conflicts between the North (China) and the South (Champa) still existed during the transition from Trần Vietnam to Lê Vietnam, and it was also a time of conversion from a Buddhist society to Confucian society. The people who died during this great period of confusion and transition were likely to roam around as vengeful ghosts. Regardless of how they died, whether it was because of human or natural circumstances, these vengeful ghosts were a product of Vietnamese Wars, but at the same time they were also a paradox that Vietnamese society had to face.
