식물유래담에 드러난 변신과 욕망의 표현 (The Transformation and Desire Expression in Plant-derived Stories)

초록

식물유래담은 꽃이나 나무, 풀의 외양 및 생태에 대한 호기심으로 출발한 설화의 일종이다. 변신담으로서 식물유래담은 그동안 모종의 실패담으로 이해되어 온 경향이 있다. 그러나 제대로 발화되지 못한 변신자의 욕망에 주목하여 이야기들을 다시 듣고 읽어보면, 식물유래담은 단순히 욕망이 좌절되어 죽음에 이르는 이들의 이야기가 아니다. 오히려 여성의 입으로 전해지는 여성들의 이야기로서, 오히려 발 붙이고 살 곳 없던 존재들이 욕망의 관철과 의지를 통해 식물의 몸으로 땅에 뿌리내리는 모습을담고 있다. 우선 <할미꽃의 유래>, <며느리밥풀꽃의 유래> 유형은 어머니이자 딸로서, 시어머니이자 며느리로서 ‘가족 되기’의 과정에서 갈등을겪고 식물로 환생하는 이야기들이다. 이 이야기들은 구연의 도입부에서꽃의 외양을 묘사하며 시작하며, 꽃의 작명에도 외양과 직관적으로 관련된 표현이 들어가 있다는 점에서 ‘외적 형상화’의 문제와 관련된다. 다음으로 <능소화 생긴 내력>, <백일홍 전설>은 연인의 무관심과 모종의 착오로 인해 더 이상 기다림을 수행할 수 없게 된 여인들이 죽어 꽃이 되는이야기들이다. <등나무가 된 자매>와 더불어 일련의 서사들은 식물의 생태적인 면모까지도 이야기 속에 녹여내어 구연해왔음을 보여준다 이러한경향의 연원은 여성과 남성 간 사랑의 결실로서 재생산이라는 생태적인결합이 좌절되는 양태가 식물의 생태와 관련되어 이해되어 온 경향에 있다. 다만 남성 화자의 구연이 서사 속 여성 인물들의 결말을 다소 절망적으로 그리는 반면, 여성 화자의 구연이 공감과 슬픔을 바탕으로 공동체적으로 향유된다는 점에서 식물유래담은 여성의 못다이룬 욕망의 표현으로서 이 세계에 뿌리 내린 대안적 삶을 상상하는 서사로서 다룰 수 있다.

영어초록

A plant-derived story is a kind of narrative that started with a curiosity about the appearance and ecology of flowers, trees, and grass. As a transformational story, plant-derived stories tend to be understood as some kind of failure story. However, if we listen to and read the stories again, paying attention to the desires of the transformers who have not been properly ignited, the story of plant-derived stories is not simply a story of people whose desires are frustrated and die.
Rather, it is a story of women told through the mouth of women, and rather, it contains a scene where beings who had no place to live are rooted to the ground with the body of a plant through the fulfillment and will of desire. First of all, the types “The Origin of Halmi Flower” and “The Origin of Daughter-in-law’s Rice Grass Flower” are stories of being reborn as plants after conflict in the process of “being a family” as a mother and daughter, as a mother-in-law and a daughter-in-law. These stories begin with a description of the appearance of a flower at the introduction of the oral story, and are related to the problem of “external imagery” in that the naming of the flower contains expressions that are intuitively related to the appearance. Next, “The History of Trumpet Creeper” and “The Legend of Baek Il-hong” are stories of women who are no longer able to wait due to their lover's indifference and some kind of error, die and become flowers. A series of narratives, along with “Sisters Becoming Wister,” show that even the ecological aspect of plants has been melted into the story and narrated. The origin of this trend is the fruit of love between women and men, and the pattern of frustrating the ecological combination of reproduction has been understood in relation to the ecology of plants. However, plant-derived stories can be treated as narratives that imagine alternative lives rooted in this world as an expression of women’s nailed-down desires, while the male narrator’s narrative depicts the ending of female characters in the narrative somewhat hopelessly.
