이 논문은 이광수의 재생과 장광츠(蔣光慈)의 소설 구름을 뚫고 나온 달빛(冲出云围的月亮)에 나타난 매독 모티브와 정치적 은유를 비교하고자 한논문이다. 두 소설은 혁명 운동을 소설적 배경으로 하여 작성되었으며, 두 소설속에 나오는 주인공은 모두 근대 교육을 받은 신여성으로 한때 혁명 운동에 참여하였으나, 혁명 실패 이후 왜곡된 사상으로 인하여 점차 타락하여 매독에 걸리게 되었다는 서사를 바탕으로 하고 있다. 이들의 타락은 단순히 성적 타락이아닌, 정신적 감염과도 밀접하게 연결되어 있으며 매독 또한 소설에서 실질적인 질병으로서의 감염병이라기보다는, 탈선한 여성 주인공들을 징벌하기 위한 은유로 쓰인다. 이광수와 장광츠는 ‘매독’ 소재를 통해 여성의 건강한 육체를 혐오의 대상으로 만들고 숭고한 이념으로 무장한 인간을 이상향으로 설정한다. 본고에서는 계몽(정신성)과 매독(육체성)의 대결 구도 속에서 이원화된 계몽 담론을 지향해 나갔던 이광수의 정치적 무의식을 재생과 구름을 뚫고 나온 달빛의 매독 서사의 비교를 통해 밝혀 보고자 한다.

영어초록

This these intends to make comparison of the syphilis motive and political metaphor that are appeared on the novels of Regeneration, written by Lee Gwang-soo and 「 Moonlight through Clouds」, written by Jiang Guangci. The above-named novels are deployed on the basis of the narratives regarding the female main characters who once participated in the revolutionary movement, but gradually decadent after the failed revolution, resulting in contracting the syphilis. Through this comparison, it is demonstrated the followings.
First, those two novels had the background of the 3·1 Movement and the 4·12 Incident where there were young men and women threw themselves in the revolution with the burning passion for such movement. However, after the failed revolution, the directions of those young ones were significantly diverted, for a group that represented the physical features to expose to all kinds of materialistic seduction in their wandering minds and a group that strived for the mental aspect to unyieldingly pursue the ideology of the revolution. Second, those wandering female characters encountered the punishment from their decadence to contract the syphilis, and at this time, the bodies functioned not as the place where the individuals reside but as the place with public features with random ideologies in kinds. Soon young caught the syphilis in fact and Maning erroneously concluded to have the syphilis from erroneous view on revolution, but in these two novels, the syphilis was closely connected to the mental infection, not just a simple sexual decadence. And third, together with the physical punishment through the syphilis, the novels intended to present a truthful path by providing the opportunity of revitalization for those who repent their wrong. In Regeneration, it is presented through Bonggoo, while it is presented through Maning in 「Moonlight through Clouds」. In between the two views of value in individualism and collectivism, Bonggoo and Maning were born again as the true warrior of revolution by passing the respective death.
