교사지지와 학업성취 간 관계에서자기초월가치와 숙달목표의 역할: 다층구조방정식을 적용한 매개효과 분석 (The Role of Self-Transcendence Value and Mastery Goal in the Relation between Teacher Support and Academic Achievement: Mediation Analysis Using Multilevel Structural Equation Modeling)

초록

본 연구에서는 고등학생을 대상으로 교사지지, 자기초월가치, 숙달목표, 학업성취(읽기, 수학, 과학)의 구조적 관계를 살펴보고, 특히 학생에 대한 교사의 지지와 학생의 학업성취 간 관계에서 자기초월가치와 숙달목표의 매개효과가 있는지 탐색하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 PISA 2018의 우리나라 고등학교 1학년 자료(150개교, 남: 2,870명, 여: 2,674명)를 활용하였으며, 학교에 학생이 내재된 자료의 위계적 구조를 고려하여 다층구조방정식 모형을 적용해 분석하였다. 주요 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 학생과 학교 수준 모두에서 교사지지가 학업성취에 미치는 직접효과는 유의하지 않았으나, 자기초월가치와 숙달목표를 매개로 한 간접효과는 유의하였다. 구체적으로 학생 수준에서는 교사지지가 자기초월가치와 숙달목표를 매개로 학업성취에 정적인 간접효과를, 학교 수준에서는 교사지지가 자기초월가치를 매개로 학업성취에 정적인 간접효과를 보였다. 둘째, 교사지지는 학생과 학교 수준 모두에서 자기초월가치와 숙달목표에 정적으로 유의한 직접효과가 있었으며, 동시에 교사지지가 자기초월가치를 매개로 숙달목표에 미치는 정적인 간접효과도 유의하였다. 셋째, 학생 및 학교 수준 모두에서 자기초월가치가 학업성취와 숙달목표에 정적인 직접효과를 보이는 것으로 확인되었다. 넷째, 숙달목표가 학업성취에 미치는 효과가 학생 수준에서는 정적으로 유의하였으나 학교 수준에서는 유의하지 않았다. 이러한 연구 결과를 통해 교사지지가 학생의 학업성취에 미치는 영향에 있어 이타적인 자기초월가치와 배움 자체의 즐거움에 초점을 두는 숙달목표가 중요한 역할을 함을 확인하였다. 또한, 학생의 자기초월가치와 숙달목표의 증진을 위해서는 교사의 따뜻한 지지와 이해가 필요함을 시사하였다.

영어초록

The present study aimed to explore the structural relations among teacher support, self-transcendence value, mastery goal, and academic achievement for high school students, with a special focus on the roles of self-transcendence value and mastery goal in the relationship between teacher support and academic achievement. For this purpose, the data on Korean high-school students from Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2018 were analyzed using multilevel structural equation modeling, taking into account students nested within schools. The main results were as follows. First, at the student as well as the school levels, the direct effects of teacher support on academic achievement were not statistically significant, while the indirect effects of teacher support through the self-transcendence value and mastery goal were. Specifically, at the student level, teacher support showed positive indirect effects through the self-transcendence value and mastery goal on academic achievement. At the school level, teacher support showed a positive indirect effect on academic achievement only through the self-transcendence value. Second, teacher support had positive direct effects on the self-transcendence value and mastery goal at the student and school levels. At the same time, there were positive indirect effects of teacher support through the self-transcendence value on the mastery goal. Third, the self-transcendence value showed positive direct effects on the mastery goal at the student as well as the school levels. Fourth, the effect of the mastery goal on academic achievement was positively significant at the student level but not at the school level. These results confirm the important roles of the altruistic self-transcendence value and a learning-focused mastery goal in relation to teacher support and student achievement. In addition, the results suggest that teachers’ warm support and care should be provided in order to improve students’ self-transcendence value and mastery goal.
