이 논문은 1935년 간행된 한반도 최대의 가집 『조선풍토가집』에서 식민지 ‘조선’의 수도 경성이 어떻게 ‘조선색’의 풍토로 위치하고 표상되며 역사 기억을 어떠한 방식으로 내재하는지 고찰한 것이다. 일본인과 조선인, 전근대와 근대, 조선의 전통과 외래의 문물이 혼합된 거대한 용광로 같은 공간 서울이라는 대도시에 잠복한 과거 서사와 일본인들의 역사기억을 살펴보고자 했다. 경성의 ‘풍토’는 ‘내지’에서 기대하는 이국정조와 ‘조선색’의 고유함을 구현하려는 가인들의 욕구를 동시에 의식한 개념이었다. 경성 관련 단카들은 개인의체험과 기억을 바탕으로 경성 조선인들의 삶을 객체화한 것, 한양에서 경성이 변모하면서소멸 혹은 생성된 것들에 대한 변천을 포착한 것, 경성에서의 모던한 생활 양태를 그린 것등으로 유형화되었다. 특히 재조일본인들은 경성이라는 공간을 조선의 유구한 역사와 결부시킬 때 공통의 기억 장치를 가지고 있었는데, 그것은 임진왜란이나 청일전쟁 등 1910년 이전의 한일관계를 보여주는 장소에 대한 기억이었다. 일본인 가인들이 드러낸 이러한 기억장치는 식민지주의에 의한 집단적 무의식이라고 할 수 있는데, 역사 환기의 장으로 토포스가 된 경성 풍토 단카를 통하여 약 30년간 유효했던 기억의 왜곡, 소거, 혹은 강화의 양상을 분석했다.

영어초록

This paper considers how Keijo (modern-day Seoul), the capital of colonial Joseon, is represented in terms of the local color its natural features provided, and in what manner its historical conditions are depicted in The Joseon Natural Features Tanka Anthology (the most significant Tanka anthology focused on the Korean Peninsula), published in 1935. I have attempted to examine the perspective on history and the narrative focus of the Japanese authors in this anthology as they depict Keijo, which was a melting pot in which the Japanese and the Koreans, the pre-modern and modern, and Joseon’s traditions and foreign culture intermingled.
The natural features of Keijo are the focus of these authors, conscious as they were of the exoticism of Korea to Japanese readers, and the local distinctiveness these Tanka writers desired to portray. Tanka texts related to Keijo seek to capture local people’s lives based on personal experience and memory, the evolution of contemporary Joseon society in the process of disappearance or creation during the transition from Hanyang to Keijo, and the various forms of contemporary life in Keijo. Japanese residents on the Korean peninsula in particular had common historical memories of Keijo, as the city was the locus of pivotal events affecting Korea and Japan prior to 1910, such as the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592 and the First Sino-Japanese War in 1894. The work of the Japanese Tanka writers effectively served as a mnemonic device exposing the collective unconscious which stemmed from colonialism. In this light I have analyzed the distortions, erasures and consolidations of memory of The Joseon Natural Features Tanka Anthology, which includes texts written over the course of 30 years, and which depicts Keijo through the prism of its topos as the site of historical evocation.
