일본근대문학과 사계(四季) ―『고도(古都)』의 계절묘사를 통해본 가와바타 川端 문학의 특징― (Representing the Four Seasons in Kawabata's "KOTO": A Study on Literary Characteristics in Modern Japanese Literature)

초록

일본문학은 전통적으로 자연 계절 묘사의 뿌리가 깊다. 일본근대문학에도 이 전통은 이어졌고, 특히 근대의 대표적인 작가 가와바타 야스나리 川端康成(1899-1972)문학에 사계절(四季節)의 묘사가 뚜렷하다. 가와바타의 소설 『고도(古都)』(1962)를 소재로 ‘사계(四季)’와의 관련 양상을 짚어보고, ‘봄(春)’의 표현을 중심으로 『고도』의 특징을 분석하여 가와바타 문학다움을 확인하고자 한다.
『고도』가 자연 계절 묘사의 서정성을 비롯하여, 고독과 허무의 표현, 상징성, 전통 지향, 순환하는 삶 등 가와바타 문학의 특징을 여실히 반영하고 있는 점은 분명하다. 가와바타는 특히 후반기에 일본 문학의 오랜 전통에 따라 계절 묘사, 그 중에서 고도(古都) 교토 京都의 사계 표현을 즐겨하였다는 점에 착안하여 그 실제를 살펴보고 그 의미를 고찰한다.
『고도』는 사계절 표현이 구체적이며, 봄의 묘사를 통해보아도 가와바타 문학다운 특징이 아주 잘 투영되어 있다는 것을 알 수 있다. 예를 들어, 이 작품의 서두는, 부드러운 봄날의 서정에 감동하는 자그마한 인생, 그러나 매년 봄이 오면 눈에 잘 띄지 않는 곳에서도 각각 고독하게 생명의 싹을 틔우고 해마다 피어나는 작은 제비꽃처럼 계절도 인생도 순환하며 인연을 끊임없이 이어간다는 것을 보여주고 있다. 이 서두 묘사가, 교토의 계절별 연중행사를 배경으로, 태어나자마자 헤어져 전혀 다른 삶을 살아가는 쌍둥이 자매의 우연한 만남과 헤어짐이라는 이야기 전체의 흐름을 암시하고 작품 전개에 영향을 주고 있다고 하겠다.
일본인은 예부터 눈 달 꽃(雪月花), 화조풍월(花鳥風月)의 표현을 즐겨, 특히 꽃구경 お花見하는 풍습과 그 문화, 예술화는 문예와 회화 등 각 분야에서 넘쳐날 정도이다. 실제 꽃구경은 일상생활의 중요한 행사가 되어 그 인파는 수를 헤아릴 수 없이 많고 그들을 맞이하는 측도 만전의 준비를 다하고 있다. 또한, 「꽃의 명소」「단풍의 명소」등 여행안내서는 친절하고 상세하다. 가와바타의 『고도』도 이러한 일본인의 취향의 연장선에서 작품화되었다고 생각한다.
이상의 내용을 통해 일본근대문학 특히 가와바타의 『고도』의 봄의 표현을 중심으로 문예 작품의 전개에 영향을 미치는 사계의 표현과 그 의미를 추구하여 일본인의 기호와 일본문예의 특징을 고찰할 수 있다.

영어초록

　This study reviews the traditional description on the seasons in Japanese literature and see the relationship between the seasons and Japanese literature with Kawabata Yasunari's(川端康成;1899-1972) literary works, which are the representative works of Japanese modern literature. After addressing the relationship between the four seasons and the Kawabata's(川端) literary work "KOTO(古都:1962)", it finds the character of "KOTO" regarding the expressions on the spring and identifies the character of Kawabata's literature.
　"KOTO" clearly reflects the character of Kawabata's literature with a lyricism of description on the natural seasons, the expression of solitude and futility, symbolism, tradition-oriented aspect, and cycle of the life. Japanese literature is traditionally rooted in the description on the natural seasons. Especially Kawabata, among the Japanese modern writer, followed the long tradition of Japanese literature and described the seasons in his late time. Therefore, paying attention to his description of Kyoto's four seasons in the "KOTO", this study examines the literature and the meaning of description.
　"KOTO" shows concrete description of the four seasons and reflects the character of Kawabata's literature, on this study, which clarifies through the description on the spring. Especially, in the beginning of "KOTO", it describes that a little violet buds the sprout of life in the noteless space every springs and perennates although a mild spring day touches a trivial life, which shows life circulates like the season does and they continually connect.
　The Japanese like the description of 'snow, moon, flowers, bird, and wind' since old times and especially the custom and the culture of flower-viewing overflow in the literature and art. In reality, the flower-viewing became the important events in the daily life, the visitors are innumerable and the hosts also make a full preparation for that. In addition, a guide book like "famous sights of flowers" and "famous sights of the autum leaves" is very kind and detailed. It is possibly considered Kawabata wrote "KOTO" from the extension of this Japanese taste.
　With mentioned above, focusing on the expression of spring in Kawabata's "KOTO", it examines the expression and the meaning of the four seasons affecting the development of the literature and it also considers the Japanese preference and the character of Japanese literature.
