‘玄牝’에 관한 內丹的 考察 (A Study on the Inner Alchemy of ‘Hyeonbin(玄牝)’)

초록

‘玄牝’은 玄關이라고도 하는데 內丹 수련에서 매우 중요한 용어이다. 현빈이라는 용어는 『道德經』 6장에 처음 보이는데, 이에 대한 해석이 관점에 따라 다양하다. 河上公은 ‘玄’은 하늘인데 사람에 있어서는 코에 해당되고, ‘牝’은 땅인데 사람에 있어서는 입에 해당된다고 말하고 있다. 즉, 현빈은 하늘의 기운과 땅의 곡식을 받아들이는 생명의 문이라는 것이다. 想爾註는 玄牝을 각각 하늘과 땅, 남자와 여자에 비유하면서 도교 양생술의 ‘精→氣→神’의 기본적 원리를 담아 양생술의 방법으로 설명하고 있다. 이에 비해 王弼은 ‘谷神’의 의미를 중요시하여 만물이 이루어지되 형상을 볼 수 없는 지극한 존재로서 이름을 지을 수가 없으므로 현빈이라 한다고 하였다. 결국 『도덕경』 6장에서의 ‘현빈’이란 계곡의 신처럼 죽지 않고 영원하며 천지만물을 잉태하고 탄생시켜 자라게 하는 현묘한 여성성을 가진 개념을 말한다고 할 수 있다.
중국 內丹書 중에서 ‘현빈’을 찾아볼 수 있는 것들은 매우 많은데, 그 의미는 유사하지만 구체적인 표현은 다양하다. 현빈에 대해 어떤 내단가는 ‘하단전’이나 ‘중단전’으로 보기도 하고, 어떤 내단가는 몸 가운데를 관통하는 經脈이라고도 하며, 어떤 내단가는 형체상의 關竅가 아니라 몸과 마음의 중심이라고 말하는 등 차이가 있다.
한국 內丹書 중에서 ‘현빈’을 찾아볼 수 있는 것으로는, 조선 명종 때 지었다고 알려진 鄭 의 『龍虎祕訣』과 1920년에 출판된 全秉薰의 『精神哲學通編』이 눈에 띈다. 정렴은 ‘玄牝一竅’를 얻게 되면 백가지 구멍과 모두 통하게 되며 수련의 시작이라고 하였다. 전병훈은 여러 내단서에서 언급한 ‘현빈’에 대해 인용한 후 神氣를 연마하는 穴이라고 하면서, 인체 내의 상ㆍ중ㆍ하단전을 연결하여 眞氣가 유통하는 경로로 보고 있다.
결론적으로 내단 수련에 있어서의 ‘현빈’은 그 중요성이나 역할에 대해서는 유사하게 인정하고 있으나 그 형상이나 위치에 대해서는 내단가들의 경험에 따라 차이가 나지만, 대체로 大周天 이상의 수련에서 나타나는 ‘상체 한 가운데를 수직으로 관통하는 經脈’으로 보는 것이 무리가 없을 것이다.

영어초록

Hyeonbin(玄牝) is also called "hyeongwan(玄關)". It is a very important term in the inner Alchemy. The term 'hyeonbin(玄牝)' is seen for the first time in Chapter 6 of Tao Te Ching(道德經). The interpretations regarding this are diverse according to the viewpoint. Hasanggong(河上公) says that ‘hyeon(玄)’ is the sky and, with regard to a person, it pertains to the nose. And it says that ‘bin(牝)’ is the ground and it pertains to the mouth with regard to a person. Or, in other words, it is that hyeonbin(玄牝) is a door of life that accepts the energy of the sky and the grains of the earth.
Compared to this, Wangpil(王弼) considered the meaning of ‘Gokshin(谷神)’ to be important. It is said that, as a utmost existence that cannot see the shapes and the forms although everything is made, because no name could be given, it was called "hyeonbin(玄牝)".
It can be said that, eventually, ‘Hyeonbin(玄牝)’ in Chapter 6 of Tao Te Ching(道德經) speaks of a concept that possesses the profound femininity which does not die and is eternal like the spirit of a valley, gestates, gives birth to everything under the sun, and makes them grow.
There are many writings for inner Alchemy from China where ‘Hyeonbin(玄牝)’ can be found. Although the meaning is similar, the specific expressions are diverse. Regarding hyeonbin(玄牝), Hasanggong(河上公) and the others see it as an organ that inhales and exhales the energy, most of the inner Alchemy trainer see it as an organ where the energy gathers in and is kept. However, regarding the figuration of hyeonbin(玄牝), the einner Alchemy trainer see it as a 'hadanjeon(下丹田)' or a 'jungdanjeon(中丹田)' and also say that it is a radial passage that penetrates the center of the body. And, what is more, there are the differences, including that it is the center of the mind and the body and the others of the like instead of being a bolt hole in terms of the shape.
Among the writings for inner Alchemy from Korea, as for the things in which hyeonbin(玄牝) can be found, the Yonghobigyeol(龍虎秘訣) by Jeong Ryeom(鄭 ), which is known to have been written at the time of the King Myeongjong(明宗) of the Joseon(朝鮮) Dynasty and Jeongsincheolhaktongpyeon(精神哲學通編) by Jeon Byeong-hoon(全秉薰), which was published in the year 1920, catch the eye. Jeong Ryeom(鄭 ) said that, if the 'hyeonbinilgyu(玄牝一竅)' gets obtained, everything can pass through the hundred holes, and this is the beginning of the training. After quoting regarding hyeonbin(玄牝), which was mentioned in the many inner Alchemy writings, Jeon Byeong-hoon(全秉薰) said that it is the hole that trains the mind and the energy. He sees it as the routes through which the real energy is distributed by connecting the hadanjeon(下丹田), the jungdanjeon(中丹田) and the sangdanjeon(上丹田) of the human body.
In conclusion, regarding the importance and the role of ‘Hyeonbin(玄牝)’, in relation to the inner Alchemy training, they have been recognized similarly. However, we can find out that, regarding the shape and the position is a radial passage that penetrates the center of the body, there are the differences according to the experiences of the inner Alchemy trainer.
