초록

본 논문은 벤처기업과 중소기업이 많은 코스닥등록 기업을 대상으로 코스닥 기업의 어떤 재무적 특성이 외국인 투자를 유인하는지를 실증분석을 통해 연구하였다. 특히 신규공개기업을 대상으로 기업의 상장시점과 그 이전 시점(상장되기 1년전)까지의 자료를 이용하여 외국인 투자가 언제 발생하였는지를 파악하고 외국인 투자가 언제 최초로 발생하였는지를 확인하였다. 이는 외국인 투자자들의 기업경영에 대한 영향력을 배제한 상태에서 최초로 외국인 투자를 유인하는 재무적 특성이 어떤 것인지를 파악할 수 있기 때문이다. 본 연구의 결과에 의하면 투자규모와 관련 없이 외국인 투자자들이 최초로 투자를 할 때에 중요하게 여기는 기업의 재무적 특성은 자본적 지출, 성장성과 기업규모로 대변되는 자본조달비용 등인 것으로 나타났으나 수익성과 배당정책을 나타내는 변수는 유의하지 않은 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 투자규모를 고려하는 경우, 즉 외국인의 투자지분이 5%이상인 경우, 유의하지 않았던 수익성과 배당정책 변수들이 유의한 것으로 나타나 투자규모가 5%이상인 경우, 수익성과 배당정책도 외국인의 투자를 결정할 수 있는 유인이 되는 것으로 나타났다. 한편 토빗분석의 결과에 의하면 외국인 투자자들은 기존에 투자한 기업에 지속적으로 지분투자를 하는 것으로 나타났다.

영어초록

This study examines which factors of financial information of KOSDAQ firms induce the investment of foreign investors. Numerous studies have examined this issue by exploring the relation between the foreign ownership and the cash dividend payment and/or capital investments of domestic firms. However, there has been no empirical study which examines which factors of financial information of KOSDAQ firms induce the investment of foreign investors. Foreign investors are perceived to have superior information and the superior ability of information analysis. Among financial factors, the paper pursues which factors are weighted heavily in determining the foreign investment. When examining the relationship between foreign investments and financial factors of domestic firms, there are also several statistical issues on the empirical methodology. The most prominent problem is the lead and lag relation between the foreign investment and some financial factors, such as dividend payments and capital expenditures. In this study, this problem is mitigated by carefully constructing samples according to the lead and lag relation between the foreign investment and financial factors. The study examines the inducement of foreign investment by using the probit and tobit analyses. The findings of the probit analyses suggest that variables indicating capital expenditures such as R&D and advertising expenditures, a variable for the growth opportunity measured by market value to book value of net assets, and the dividend ratio are statistically significant factors affecting the inducement of foreign investments on both samples. This paper also examines the inducement factors of foreign investments using the tobit analysis. The findings of the tobit analysis are similar to those of the probit analyses except R&D and advertising expenditure variables. This paper is the first to examine which financial factors affect the investment decision of foreign investors. The results presented in this paper suggests which financial factors are important for domestic firms, particularly SMEs, to attract foreign investments. For these aspects, this research has its own contribution to the existing literature.
