한국 다문화가족 TV드라마의 특성 연구 (A Study on TV Dramas Featuring the Life of Multicultural Families in Korea)

초록

외국인 100만 명 시대를 맞이한 우리 사회는 다문화사회로 진입하고 있다고 볼 수 있다. 이 논문은 결혼이주 여성이 가족으로 편입되면서 나타나는 인종적, 문화적 갈등과 우리 사회의 편견을 재현하는 다문화가족 TV드라마를 통해 이 드라마들이 지니고 있는 타자에 대한 인식을 통해 우리 사회의 다문화에 대한 시각을 분석한 것이다.
그동안의 다문화가족 TV드라마 연구에서는 외국인의 가족 편입과정에서 다문화의 문제점을 드러냈다기보다는 멜로드라마로 되어버렸다고 비판받아왔다. 그러나 ‘다문화 TV가족드라마’는 ‘가족 만들기’라는 가족드라마의 형식 안에서 분석을 해야 할 것이다. 그러므로 이 논문에서는 멜로드라마적 요소가 있어서 주제의식이 약하다든지 하는 잣대로 폄하하는 관점은 TV드라마의 긍정적 기능을 인정하지 않는 편견에 불과하다고 보았다.
이 논문은 가족이라는 이름으로 우리 사회에 살아가는 결혼이주 여성들에 대한 한국 사회의 시각을 ‘남을 섬김에서 주체의 탄생’을 발견하는 레비나스의 ‘절대적 환대’를 기준으로 그 재현양상을 구분하였다.
타자의 입장과 주체의 입장 모두에서 어떠한 양상이 나타나는지를 살핀 결과, 이 글의 텍스트인 <황금신부>는 타자의 주체적 편입 과정으로, <하노이 신부>와 <산너머 남촌에는> 중 하이엔 일화는 타자에 대해 겉으로는 필요에 의해 환대를 표방하지만 속마음은 환대에 이르지 못하는 이중적 시선으로, <깜근이 엄마>는 타자를 환대할 수 없었던 주체가 어떻게 타자를 환대하게 되는지의 과정을 그린 것으로 나타났다.
이 드라마들은 멜로드라마적 요소보다는 가족이 된 부부, 부모나 자식 세대 간의 소통에 서사의 핵심이 있는 드라마이다. 그러므로 한국의 가족이데올로기라는 끈끈한 유대관계 속에서 결혼이주 여성의 입장이 놓일 수밖에 없다. 또한 전처의 혼혈 자식을 자신의 친자식으로 키워내야 하는 새엄마의 입장 역시 ‘가족드라마’에서 나타나는 ‘화합’의 특성이 지배적일 수밖에 없다는 점으로 인해 동화주의의 모델로 볼 것이 아니라는 점을 강조하였다.
그러므로 한국 다문화가족 TV드라마는 동화주의에 빠진 멜로드라마로 폄하할 것이 아니다. ‘환대에는 이율배반이 있다’고 천명한 데리다의 말처럼 이들 드라마에서 나타나는 양상이 진정한 환대라고 보기는 어렵지만, 가족의 지평을 넓히는 과정의 진통을 재현했다는 점에서 다문화에 대한 인식의 변화에 긍정적 영향을 주었다고 보았다.

영어초록

With the number of foreigners living in Korea exceeding one million, it is rapidly becoming a multinational country. Under such circumstances, this paper aims to examine the current perspective of ‘multiculturalism’ in Korean society and the public’s recognition about the Other by closely looking at the representation of a few television dramas where foreign women immigrate to become a member of Korean family causing racial and cultural conflicts while reflecting the public’s prejudice against foreigners.
TV dramas featuring multicultural families should not be criticized for the reason that they describe the active assimilation process of a stranger into Korean society in a melodramatic style, but should be analyzed in the framework of a family drama which focuses on the creation of a family.
Denouncing TV dramas calling them less theme-oriented because of their melodramatic elements is nothing but a prejudice which doesn’t recognize the positive effects of dramas.
Through TV dramas which featured multicultural families, I tried to show the Korean society’s perspectives about foreign women who became a Korean through an international marriage. In doing so, Emmanuel Levinas’ idea of an ‘infinite and absolute hospitality’ which found the birth of a subject in serving others was adopted as criteria to find out the representation of the mutually different positions of the subject and the Other.
Different approaches were used to examine the multiple aspects of the four texts for this paper. <A Bride from Hanoi> and <South village over the mountain> were examined from the viewpoint of Koreans’ double standard toward the Other with presenting hospitality externally.
<A Golden Bride> was studied as the Other’s active and independent assimilation into Korean society. On the other hand, <Kkamgeun’s Mom> was identified as a process where the subject who couldn't have a hospitality to Other embraces the Other.
Instead of featuring melodramatic elements, the four TV dramas largely focus on the communications between generations. All the foreign women in the dramas were thrown into the Korean society which is dominated by a family-centered ideology. In the case of the new mother who had to raise a mixed-blood son from her husband’s previous marriage, I emphasized that ‘harmony’ was unavoidably the main feature, It was not examined as the model of assimilation.
Therefore, TV dramas featuring multicultural families in Korea have not to be denounced as a melodrama in the process of assimilation. As Jacques Derrida said "There is an antinomy in hospitality", it's hard to say that TV dramas as mentioned before represent the real hospitality. However, it represents the process in the throes of extending family prospect. I believe the TV dramas featuring multicultural families in Korea have given positive influence upon the change of the public’s recognition to multilateral culture.
