초록

문익환 목사는 구약 교수, 성서 번역가, 민권 운동가, 그리고 시인으로 다양한 면모를 보여준 인물이다. 이 글은 그의 탄신 100주년을 기념하여 신학적 특징을 다룬다. 문익환의 신학은 일상어 신학과 빈자가 된신학으로 요약할 수 있다. 특히 일상어란 vernacular를 반영한 것으로늦봄의 생애 후반기에 완성된 입말로서 학문적 글쓰기 혹은 글말에 대조된다.
이 논문의 방법론은 그가 소개한 번역 이론에 바탕을 둔다. 늦봄은서구의 전통적인 문법 이론이 성서 번역에 적절하지 않다고 보고 나이다이론을 모델로 삼는다. 일반 문법은 명사, 동사, 형용사, 전치사 등 품사로 범주화하여 설명하지만 번역에는 한계가 있다는 주장이다. 따라서 늦봄은 경험과 인지 차원의 보다 보편적인 범주를 찾아낸다. 곧 추상어, 객체어, 사건어, 관계어 등이다.
문익환은 성서를 연구하는 데 많은 시간을 보냈고 논문과 글을 남겼다. 그러나 조국은 그를 텍스트에서 콘텍스트 곧 역사의 현장으로 불러냈다. 하지만 그에게 텍스트와 콘텍스트는 분리된 공간이 아니라 자유롭게 넘나드는 하나의 현장이었다. 그가 주장한 대로 ‘텍스트와 콘텍스트는나와 너가 만나는 현장’이기 때문에 둘 사이의 구분은 있을 수 없었다.
늦봄의 일상어는 누구나 이해할 수 있는 입말이며, 그의 신학 여정은타자를 위한 헌신으로 자신이 ‘땅끝 사람’이 되는 삶이자 예언자적 실천이었다.

영어초록

As a celebration of the centennial anniversary of his birth, this article will explore the theological significance of Rev. Moon Ik Hwan. Moon’s major theological contributions were, first his vernacular theology, and second the struggle of spiritual poverty. The first (expressed in terms of his emphasis on the spoken word) was the mark of his later years, a focus on simple verbal concepts in contrast to complex academic terms, or written words.
Moon took the lead in translating the Hebrew Bible into Korean, a project to produce a Common Translation Bible in which Protestants cooperated with the Korean Catholic Church. Rev. Moon presented the paper, “From Hebrew to Korean: Problems of Bible Translation,” in 1974. He argued that western grammar does not fit Bible translation theory. He suggested Eugene A. Nida’s translation theory for the first time in Korea. In general, western grammar categorizes such things as nouns, verbs, adverbs, propositions, etc. According to Moon, however, Bible translation requires more a more universal experience and recognition of such concepts as abstract words, object words, event words, and relation words.
In each stage the above mentioned equivalent word plays major role in analyzing Rev. Moon’s theology. For example, event word, implied action or movement, and reflects his own propensity in ministry to take action and jump into the current of events. Moreover, the object word tells what is standard. At last, relation word, known proposition, explains between two like the possessive case.
Rev. Moon released several academic articles and general columns after spending a lot of time studying the Bible. Early on his time was consumed with the text In later life, however, Moon turns his attention to the events of real history. For Rev. Moon, the text became inseparable from the context in which it was understood. There was a free intercourse between the two. It is because there is no boundary between text and context, as he presents in his paper “The Hebraic outlook of the world.” Moon’s vernacular theology as spoken word is easy for everyone to understand, his theological journey is for the poor but he himself finally becomes poor like “the people at the end of the world.” His theology is summarized as a prophetic life and praxis.
