초록

This study adopts a frequency-driven quantitative approach to identify whether different EFL proficiency levels use different Parts of Speech (POS) on speaking corpora. This research aims to provide guidelines for teaching specific POS related to grammar pattern errors which EFL learners commonly make. The data for this study was collected from the TOEIC Speaking test results of students with varying levels of English proficiency. The corpus data was processed by the CLAWS4 software program for POS tagging. The tagged corpus was analyzed by the AntConc 3.2.4 program to calculate the frequency of POS use. Chi-square analysis and simple linear regression analysis were utilized to identify whether proficiency levels are related to the POS frequency rate. The results of this study uncover which POS are used most significantly by the high level of proficiency group and which grammar pattern errors are related to proficiency differences. In other words, the findings of this study can be referenced to decide which POS should be primarily taught to help improve the English proficiency of EFL learners.
