서구시 번역을 통한 근대 한국어 문장 형성 연구 ― 김억의 베를렌느와 보들레르 번역을 중심으로 ― (A Study on some aspect of the modernizationof the Korean sentence model － Focused on the Kim Eok's translation of Verlaine & Baudelaire －)

초록

본고는 한국의 초기 번역가 김억의 서양시 번역 작업을 통해 근대 한국어 문장이 성립하는 과정을 살펴보고자 하였다. 그는 번역가로서 자기를 분명히 자각하기는 한 것 같으나, 자신의 과업이 아직 그 모양이 확정되지 않은 한국어 문장체의 새로운 형식을 실험하는 것일 수 있다는 자각에 이르렀는지는 불명확하다. 김억은 베를렌느와 같이 내용의 모호함을 추구하는 작품을 번역하는 데서는 그다지 성공하지 못했으며, 중세 한국어 문장체 종결어미 '-라'의 영향력을 극복할 방법을 찾아내지 못해 원시가 지닌 고립된 개인의 처창한 정서를 옮겨 내는 데에 실패했다.
반면 김억의 보들레르 번역 성과는 일부 주목할 만하다. 김억의 「죽음의 즐거움」 번역은 '-라' 종결체에서 벗어나지 못했고 대화로 이루어진 시적 상황을 충분히 재현하지 못했으나 「유령」 번역은 자연스러운 순한글의 현대 한국어 문장체에 근접했다. 현대 한국어 문장체에 근접한 것만이 중요한 것이 아니라, 원시가 갖고 있던 내용을 충실하게 반영했다는 점이 소중한 것이다. 김억은 자신의 불충분한 번역을 통해서, 새로운 시대(근대)의 문장체의 외적 형식과, 문장이 담아야 할 내용의 충실도라는 기준을 제시한 셈이다.
근대 이후 한국어 문장의 근대화는 아직도 진행형이다. 특히 문장 형성의 계기로서 번역은 순한글의 자연스런 한국어 문장이라는 형식 준거와, 내용의 충실도라는 내적 준거를 충족시키기 위한 고투이다. 김억은 근대 한국어 문장의 외적 형식을 위한 대비를 하지 못해 번역의 과정에서 그의 언어는 무방비 상태에서 압도적으로 뒤틀렸다. 이러한 함정은 외국문장을 현대 한국어로 읽어야 하는 운명을 지닌 대부분의 현대 한국인도 피해갈 수 없는 것이다.

영어초록

Early Korean poet, Kim Eok(1896~?) made it his own duty to translate western poetry into Korean language, before the modern Korean sentence model was formulated. He identified himself as a professional translator, but it is not certain that his task of translation could mean making the new modern form of Korean sentence model. He seemed to make his best effort to devise his translation a nice one, but he failed to translate the ambiguity of poetic contents like those of Paul Verlaine(1844~1896). Moreover, he also didn't succeeded in representing the extremely miserable emotions of a isolated individual put below the original poetry because of the failure of not overcoming the influence of the middle Korean sentence's ending '-ra(라)‘.
But Kim's remarkable ccomplishments in the midst of translating Baudelaire give something for us to think seriously about. His translation of Baudelaire's <LE MORT JOYEUX> couldn't get out of the '-ra(라)‘ ending not representing the poetic situation of the dialogue of original text. But his another one of Baudelaire's <LE REVENANT> had come close to the natural modern Korean sentence model composed of Hangul, the Korean alphabet system. Not only its actual approach to the modern Korean sentence model but also the substantiality of traslation compared to original poem are important. Kim had, though insufficiently, indicated the standards of modern Korean sentence model to the effect of external form and internal substantiality.
The modernization of Korean sentence is still progressing. Given the concept that modern era is the age of translation, the translation of western language into Korean cannot be out of the mechanism of establishing modern Korean sentence model. The effort to satisfy both the formal standard of modern Hangul sentence and the internal one of the substantiality of contents must be continued now and forever. Kim threw himself to the world of poetic contents not preparing the least measure to design the external form of modern Korean sentence: The instant he had regarded himself a translator, his language was twisted overwhelmingly by the external factors of foreign languages without any protection. And most contemporary Korean people―destined to read western sentence only through the translated Korean sentence form―cannot escape this trap into which Kim falled himself.
