초록

영조는 조선 후기의 부흥기를 이끈 훌륭한 왕으로 평가받는다. 반면자신의 아들인 사도세자를 죽이는 충격적인 사건을 일으킨 주역이기도 하다. 임오화변으로 불리는 이 사건은 조선 말기에 이르기까지 여러 가지 정치적 영향을 끼쳤고, 학계에서도 그 원인을 놓고 다양한 논쟁이 벌어졌다. 그리고 대중매체에서도 여러 번 다루었기 때문에, 일반인들에게도 매우 친숙한 사건이다. 하지만 그 원인을 정확히 이해하는 사람은 많지 않다. 임오화변에 대한 해석이 여러 번 바뀌었기 때문이다.
영조는 사도세자의 과오가 컸기 때문에 부득이하게 죽음을 명할 수밖에 없었다는 당위론을 설파했다. 이에 비해 영조의 왕위를 계승한 정조는 사도세자의 친아들이라는 처지 때문에, 사도세자의 잘못은 축소하고 장점도 많았다는 점을 강변하면서 죽음에 이르게 된 까닭은 간신들이 모함을 했기 때문이라고 주장했다.
해방 이후 역사학 및 국문학에서도 논쟁이 이어졌는데, 사도세자의 부인인 혜경궁 홍씨가 기록한 『한중록』을 해석하는 입장이 달랐기 때문이었다. 『한중록』에서는 사도세자의 광증(狂症)이 원인이라고 서술하였는데, 1980년대부터 사도세자의 죽음은 당쟁에 희생된 결과라는 해석이 대두되었다. 세자빈 홍씨의 아버지인 홍봉한이 노론의 주도세력으로서 사도세자의 죽음에 깊이 개입할 수밖에 없었는데, 『한중록』에는 사위의 죽음에 개입한 홍봉한을 변명하고자, 사실과 다르게 기술한 대목이 있었다. 역사가들은 이를 근거로, 『한중록』의 신뢰성에 의문을 제기하고, 노론과 소론의 정치적 대립 속에서 사도세자가 희생되었다는 해석을 시도하였다. 그리하여 당쟁의 결과였다는 학설이 우세하였으나, 최근에는 『한중록』에 기술된 사도세자의 정신질환 증상에 대한 연구결과를 토대로 신뢰할 만하다는 견해에 무게가 실리고 있다. 따라서 영조가 정치적으로는 매우 유능한 왕이었지만, 가족에게는 편애가 심하고 사도세자를 정서적으로 학대하였다는 『한중록』의 내용역시 사실에 부합한다고 해석하고 있다. 1990년대부터 사회적으로 뛰어난 성취를 이룬 인물이라 하더라도, 성격적으로는 결함이 있을 수 있다는 관점이 한국사회에서 널리 받아들여지면서 역사적 사건과 사료의 해석도 변경된 것이다.
이를 통해, 조선시대에는 정통성과 명분론을 중시하는 성리학적 역사관이 중요한 역할을 하였음을 알 수 있다. 반면 근대 이후에는 정치적 해석을 중심으로 하는 역사관이 주류를 형성하였다. 하지만 최근의역사해석에서는 국왕이 매우 정치적인 존재이기는 하지만, 개인적인 성격이나 가족사적인 측면이 정치행위에 적지 않은 영향을 미친다는 견해를 수용하는 변화가 나타났다.
결론적으로 역사를 , 공부하는 학습자에게 ‘역사적 사건을 기록한 사료는 그 내용이 변하지 않지만, 후대의 역사관에 의해 다양한 해석이가능하다’는 점을 이해시키는 교육이 필요하다. 이를 이해하여 사안을 다각도에서 조명하는 사유방식을 연마하는 것이 대학 교양교육의 질적 향상을 도모하는 하나의 방안이기도 하다.

영어초록

King YeongJo gains evaluation as a great king who led the revival of the late Joseon era. He, on the other hand, is also the protagonist in the shocking incident that killed his own son, Prince Sado. Called the Imo Incident(壬午禍變), this incident had a number of political implications up to the end of Joseon, and various debates arose over the cause in academia as well. And because it has been covered several times in the contemporary mass media, it is a very familiar event to the general public. However, not many people understand the exact cause.
It is because the interpretation of Imo Incident(壬午禍變) has changed several times.
King YeongJo preached the justification theory that he had no choice but to order death because Prince Sado committed a big fault. On the other hand, as king Jeongjo, who inherited the throne of king YeongJo, was a son of Prince Sado by blood, while reducing Prince Sado's faults and emphasizing that there were many merits, he claimed that the cause of his father's death was due to the conspirators.
After the liberation in 1945, debates continued in the Korean history and Korean literature, and it was because the interpretation of 『Hanjoong‐ Rok (閑中錄)』, written by Princess Hyegyeong, the wife of Prince Sado, was different. In 『Hanjoong‐ Rok (閑中錄)』, it was stated that Prince Sado's lunacy (狂症) was the cause, and from the 1980s, the interpretation that Prince Sado's death was the result of a sacrifice in the faction has emerged.
Crown princess Hong's father, Hong Bong‐han, as Noron's leading force, had no choice but to intervene deeply in Prince Sado's death, and in 『Hanjoong‐ Rok (閑中錄)』, there was a passage where he was described differently from the facts in order to excuse Hong Bong‐han for intervening in the death of his son‐in‐law. Based on this, historians questioned the credibility of 『Hanjoong‐ Rok (閑中錄)』, and attempted the interpretation that Prince Sado was sacrificed in the political confrontation between Noron and Soron. As a result, the theory that it was the result of the party struggle prevailed, but the opinion that it is credible based on the recent findings as to Prince Sado's symptoms of mental illness described in 『Hanjoong‐ Rok (閑中錄)』 is gaining weight. Therefore, the contents of 『Hanjoong‐ Rok (閑中錄)』, which say that although king YeongJo was a very capable king politically, but that he showed a lot of favoritism to his family and that he emotionally abused Prince Sado, are also interpreted as being true. As the view that even though he was a figure who achieved outstanding social achievements, there may be a personality flaw is widely accepted in Korean society since the 1990s, the interpretation of historical events and historical records has also changed.
Through this, it can be seen that the neo‐Confucious view of history, which emphasizes legitimacy and justification, played an important role in the Joseon era. On the other hand, after the modern era, a view of history centered on political interpretation formed the mainstream.
However, in recent historical interpretations, there has been a change to accept the view that although the king is a very political being, personal characteristics or family history have a considerable influence on political behavior.
In conclusion, for learners of history, ‘historical records that record historical events do not change their contents, but they need education that can help them understand that various interpretations are possible depending on the historical view of future generations. Understanding this and cultivating a way of thinking that illuminates issues from various angles is also one way to achieve a qualitative improvement of university liberal arts education.
