‘燕行錄 국역 사업’의 성과와 향후 과제 ― 학술적 가치와 연계하여 ― (Achievements and Future Tasks of the “Yeonhaengrok(燕行錄) Korean Translation Project” - In connection with academic values)

초록

본고에서는 교육부의 지원을 받아 세종대왕기념사업회에서 2015년부터 수행하고 있는 ‘연행록 국역 사업’의 성과를 학술적 차원에서 평가하고 그 의미를 점검하여 앞으로의 사업 방향을 제시하는 데 주된 목적을 두고 논의를 진행하였다.
이에 지금까지 제출된 연행록 국역 성과와 ‘연행록 국역 사업’의 성과를 비교 분석하여 현재 의미를 평가하였고, 2018년부터 2020년까지 이루어진 사행 관련 학술연구 성과를 분석하여 ‘연행록 국역 사업’ 성과의 미래 가치를 점검하였다. 마지막으로 ‘연행록 국역 사업’의 성과에 비추어서 앞으로의 국역 사업 진행 방향 등에 대해 정책 제언을 더하였다.
대중국 사행기록인 연행록은 한⋅중 교류의 역사적인 기록이자 문화의 교류와 충격 그리고 자각을 드러내는 문화사적⋅지성사적 자료이다. 우리 문화유산 속에서 독자적인 가치와 의미를 지닌 문헌일 뿐만 아니라 동아시아 문화사에서도 매우 독특한 존재로 인정되고 있다. 이에 한⋅중 문화의 동질성과 이질성을 밝히는 자료로써 그 가치가 매우 높은데, 2015년부터 2019년까지 세종대왕기념사업회에서 번역 출간한 20권의 연행록은 이러한 사행기록의 학술적 가치를 드러내는 데 매우 유용한 텍스트이다.
따라서 ‘연행록 국역 사업’은 다른 어떤 사업보다도 체계적인 계획 아래에서 완성도 높은 성과를 지속적으로 제출할 필요가 있다. 더하여 학술연구와의 연계도 지금보다 더 강화해야 한다. 이를 위해서는 각 사업 주체들의 책임의식과 협업이 무엇보다도 선행되어야 할 것이다. 더하여 한국고전번역원의 평가 심사 외에도 성과발표회 및 학술세미나 등을 주기적으로 개최하여 국역 성과를 객관적으로 평가하고, 학술연구와 연계하여 새로운 비전을 모색할 필요가 있다. 무엇보다도 교육부의 안정적이며 지속적인 연구지원이 절실하다.

영어초록

This paper evaluated the achievements of the “Yeonhaengrok(燕行錄) National Translation Project”, which has been carried out by Memorial of the Great King Sejong since 2015 with the support of the Ministry of Education, at the academic level. And this paper examined meanings of the achievements and discussed the main purpose of presenting the future business direction. The “Yeonhaengrok National Translation Project” conducted by the Memorial of the Great King Sejong plays a very important role in establishing the basis for research on Sahaeng(使行:). So this paper was forced to proceed in connection with academic research.
First of all, the present meaning was evaluated by comparing and analyzing the performances of the “Yeonhaengrok National Translation Project” that have been submitted so far. Then this paper examined the future value of the achievements of the “Yeonhaengrok National Translation Project” by analyzing the achievements of academic research related to meandering from 2018 to 2020. Finally, in conjunction of the achievements of the “Yeonhaengrok National Translation Project,” policy suggestions were added on the future direction of the national translation project.
Yeonhaengrok, the record of diplomatic trip from Joseon to China(Ming and Ching), is the historical record of exchange between Korea and China, travel literature, and material of cultural⋅intellectual history indicated exchange, shock and awareness of culture. It is not only a document with its own value and meaning in Korea’s cultural heritage, but also recognized as a very unique entity in East Asian cultural history. Therefore Yeonhaengrok is very valuable as a material that reveals the homogeneity and heterogeneity of Korean-Chinese culture. The 20 volumes of Yeonhaengrok, translated and published by the Memorial of the Great King Sejong from 2015 to 2019, are very useful texts in revealing the academic value of these speculative records.
Therefore, the “Yeonhaengrok National Translation Project” needs to continuously submit high-quality results under a systematic plan than any other project. In addition, the connection with academic research should be strengthened even more than now. For this, the responsibility and cooperation of each project subject should precede anything else. Also, in addition to the evaluation of the Korean Classical Translation Institute, achievements presentations and academic seminars should be held regularly to evaluate the achievements of national translation in an overview, and to seek new visions in connection with academic research. Above all, stable and continuous research support from the Ministry of Education is desperately needed.
